Brady Bacon – Midwest Trip Brings Two Top Fives!

(Bill W) April 28, 2015 – Brady Bacon and the Hoffman Racing #69 team racked up a pair of top five finishes in their Midwest trip with the USAC National Sprint Car Series last weekend. On Friday, they scored a fifth place finish at the Eagle Raceway in Nebraska. While Saturday was a rainout in McCool Junction, Nebraska, Sunday brought a podium finish at the Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas. This weekend the Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver will bring out the Brady Bacon Racing #99 for three events with the World of Outlaws.

After drawing an early number for qualifying on Friday at Eagle, Brady watched helplessly as the track got quicker as time trials went on. He would end up ninth quick amongst the 28-car field. “Unfortunately, the track got faster and faster as qualifying went on,” he says. “That’s the way it is sometimes. It was that way there last year. We were able to survive the heat (second from fourth). It got a little scary at points.”

He would line up inside row five for the main event. “It got a little choppier than everyone thought it would,” says Brady of the track surface. “In the end, everyone was around the bottom. We needed to catch lapped cars a certain way to gain an advantage. You had to catch it right to get someone trapped on the bottom. Then you could move up and around them.

Brady would make steady progress into the top five. “We got jumbled up at the end,” he says. “We gained a spot and lost a spot and ended up fifth. Sometimes, you just have to take what you can get.”

He registered the second quick time of the night at Lakeside. “We went out early in qualifying on Sunday, which was to our benefit,” says Brady. “It wasn’t typical Lakeside. It was really slick out there, but thankfully, it came back at the end of the night. It was chopped up on the top and that gave us something to work with.”

Brady would start sixth in his heat. “We had a really good car in the heat,” he says. “We had the fastest lap, but I had a close call and almost turned it over. We kind of settled down after that and finished third.”

The feature would see him start in the fifth spot. “We were fourth out of turn one and two on the first lap,” says Brady. “We ran fourth most of the race. I tried to slide Tracy (Hines), and I kind of slid in and got bottled up on the cushion. I did a wheelie and came back down and clipped his right front. I didn’t want to do that. Obviously, I wanted to make sure I cleared him. It didn’t happen that way and I think he spun out.”

Now in third, he would make a bit for the runner-up spot. “I was able to slide by Chase (Stockon) for second,” says Brady. “He was able to get back by me there in lapped traffic. I thought we had the best car below the cushion. Obviously, Robert (Ballou) had the best car above it. We just weren’t able to quite hang on in second, but we finished third and came out unscathed.”

Brady’s weekend with the Outlaws starts Friday at the Salina Highbanks Speedway in Oklahoma, before moving to I-55 Raceway in Pevely, Missouri Saturday and the Tri-State Speedway near Haubstadt, Indiana on Sunday.
