LABOUR DAY CLASSIC WEEKEND UP NEXT FOR SOUTHERN ONTARIO SPRINTS TOUR; $2,000-TO-WIN ON SUNDAY!

By Tommy Goudge and Mike Ferrell (August 31, 2018) – London, Ontario – The 23rd season of Southern Ontario Sprints racing continues this Saturday and Sunday when the tour heads back to Brighton Speedway for the 16th Annual Labour Day Classic Weekend. Two full-points SOS events anchor the big weekend presented by Lucas Oil, Rock 107, Mystical Distributing, Ultramar Parkland Fuels Bellville, and Sanderson Tire & Automotive. The Sunday night A-Feature purse is increased, with $2,000 going to the winner, $1,000 to the runner-up, and $700 to third place.

Saturday's event features the Southern Ontario Sprints, plus Canadian Modifieds, Thunder Stocks, Comp 4's, and Stingers, plus post-race live entertainment in the campground. The SOS portion of the event will include Heat Races, "Dream Come True" Dash for Cash presented by Four Wide Design (for drivers who have never earned a checkered flag in a Sprint Car), and 25 lap $1,200-to-win A-Feature. A wingless practice session will be held after the races, time-permitting.

Sunday’s event features the Southern Ontario Sprints, plus topless Late Models, topless Canadian Modifieds, and Thunder Stocks, plus a post-race fireworks show. The SOS portion of the event will include Heat Races, Dash For Cash race sponsored by Docks Are Us, $2,000-to-win 25 lap A-Feature, and the 12 lap Simon Petit Memorial Wingless Sprint Car Dash presented by RBM Carriers, Black's Transport, Marbert Transport, Speedway Auto Machine, and Four Wide Design.

This weekend's events at Brighton are the final SOS visits to the Rinaldi Family-owned facility in 2018. The May 19 event at the 1/3 mile Brighton oval was rained out, while Dylan Westbrook, Cory Turner, and Ryan Turner claimed wins on June 16, July 7, and July 28 respectively. The SOS tour has raced at Brighton 111 times since first visiting there in 1997, with Rick Wilson’s 22 victories topping the all-time SOS win list at the Northumberland County track; eight of those 22 wins by "The Joyceville Jet" have come in Labour Day Classic Weekend events.

Valuable championship points are on the line this weekend, as just one more points-paying race remains on the SOS schedule after Labour Day. Cory Turner leads the SOS championship points standings heading into this weekend’s events, while 2016 & 2017 champ Dylan Westbrook is 49 points behind in second. Ryan Turner is third and just five points behind Westbrook, while Shawn Sliter, Jamie Turner, 2001 & 2006 champ Warren Mahoney, Frank Baranowski, Tyler Hendricks, Josh Sliter, and Steve Lyons round out the top ten.

The SOS will also be collecting donations over the weekend to raise money in support of #38 Tyler Hendricks and his family; Tyler suffered a fractured vertebrae in a crash last Friday at Ohsweken Speedway, and underwent surgery this week in Hamilton. Everyone from the Southern Ontario Sprints sends best wishes to Tyler, and we hope he will soon be able to return home to Chatham with this family.

Saturday’s event will start at the regularly scheduled time of 7:00 pm, with spectator gates scheduled to open at 5:00 pm. Sunday’s event begins one hour early at 6:00 pm, spectator with gates open at 4:00 pm. Hot laps start one hour prior to race time each night. Adult general admission is $20 for each night of racing.
