The second and final night of the Herz Precision Parts Wingless Nationals was a good one at the Cottage Grove Speedway on Sunday September 1st. Kyle Miller of Eugene would win his fourth straight title of this prestigious event after battling with hometown driver Colin Baker. The Northwest Wingless Tour, IMCA Modifieds, and Open Comp 4-Cylinders were all the divisions on the card.

After winning the scramble to put himself on the pole starting position Colin Baker was the car to beat in the early goings. Driving for car owner Hedge Carter in the Huddle Automotive Repair/Oregon West RV/Steelhouse Metal Roofing Supply #71JR XXX Baker would put his mount on the high side with the right rear on the cushion. Baker would hold off the Gary’s Subaru Service/Automotive Sheetmetal/Grant Springer Racing Engines #10 XXX of Kyle Miller at the halfway point for the mandatory fuel stop. By the halfway mark the field had went non-stop without any incidents and in the final twenty-five laps the rest of the distance would go caution free.

Baker maintained the race lead but Miller was hot on his heels after the restart. Miller missed the top briefly which gave Baker some breathing room but before too long Miller was back on Baker’s tail tank. Miller, who followed Baker on the high side, changed up his lines momentarily and went to work on the bottom to get underneath the leader. By lap thirty-three he would beat Baker at the start/finish line and eventually secured the lead.

In the remainder of the race Miller would take off and eventually lap all the way up to seventh place leaving a handful of cars on the lead lap. For Miller not only was it his fourth Herz Precision Parts Wingless Nationals victory but his tenth win of the season with the Northwest Wingless Tour.

Finishing in the runner-up spot was Rob Lindsey of Wilsonville in his Maxline Custom Cases/Speedmart Inc./Competition Suspensions Inc. #23 XXX after starting tenth and eleventh starting Steve Hix from Ventura, California would place his No Limit Powdercoating/Car Quest Auto Parts #57H Spike in third. Colin Baker would end his night in fourth followed by his teammate Josh Pelkey of Peoria, Arizona in fifth in the Huddle Automotive Repair/Oregon West RV/Steelhouse Metal Roofing Supply #71 XXX for car owner Hedge Carter.

The IMCA Modified feature would be an incident filled affair. Nonetheless despite the several stoppages some great racing would occur. Curt Coggins of Medford, like the night before, would seize the initial lead in his Pro Service Center/Colortyme/Cook Crane Corporation #21C Loose Gruff. Coggins would lead for several laps until Craig Hanson would make a move on lap eleven. Hanson, of Albany, would lead the rest of the distance in his Hanson Automotive Machine/James Gang Pizza/BSB Manufacturing #33C Shaw. Official results of the rest of the finishing order are currently under review and will be posted on the Cottage Grove Speedway website as soon as they are available.

The Open Comp 4-Cylinder feature ended up being a thriller. Taunton Swaim of Dexter was the machine to beat as he was back in the Randy Kuhl owned Bigg Dogg Recycling/A-1 Auto Supply/DT Machine #17 truck. Swaim would set a rapid pace until debris would be laid down on the track due to damage on his right side door.

The debris caution would occur on lap twelve and Swaim had to go to the work area. Melvin Walker of Goshen would get the race lead in his Froggy’s Towing/Springfield Auto Recyclers/Big B Tire #00. Walker would lead the rest of the way and win at the line in photo finish fashion between him and Swaim.

Taunton Swaim was a respectable second followed by the Dalton Carpet/T.L. Morgan Motors/Dr. Vape Products #30 of Springfield’s K.C. Scott in third. Rounding out the finishing order was Teresa Walker of Goshen in her Froggy’s Towing/Springfield Auto Recyclers/Big B Tire #31 machine.

The Cottage Grove Speedway will be in action this Wednesday September 4th as the World of Outlaw Sprint Series make their return visit to “The Grove”. This race will feature the best Sprint Car drivers in the entire world and they are excited to be back at CGS after a year hiatus. The DIRTcar Super Late Models will be the support class for the evening as they will battle for $1,000.00 to win.

Then on Saturday September 7th Cottage Grove Speedway will host their annual Historical Night. This evening will be dedicated to the Speedway’s long storied heritage and will have old photos, memorabilia, articles, and more on display along with the induction of the 2013 Class into the CGS Hall of Fame.
