Elko Spring Nationals Update
Elko Spring Nationals Update - Fuel & Track Surface
By: Greg Parent, UMSS Media Director
For those UMSS sprint car drivers expressing concern over availability of methanol alcohol fuel for the upcoming Spring Nationals weekend on April 15-16, Ron Bernhagen from the UMSS has informed me that an independent third party, Randy Hanson, will be on hand for all three UMSS Elko racing weekends in 2011 with methanol alcohol fuel. Randy Hanson has the parts truck at CLS and will also have parts on hand at Elko for the April 14 night of WISSOTA racing action. For those sprint car drivers who would like to contact Randy prior to April 15 or other drivers who have any questions regarding parts, his phone number is 952-484-5757. After the fuel issues last July at Elko, the important point the UMSS wants to get across to sprint car drivers is methanol alcohol fuel will be available at Elko from an independent third party and that the track will not be selling any.
Ron also informed me of the status of the application of the dirt surface. By the end of Tuesday April 5, the dirt surface will be completely laid down at Elko. They started earlier than first expected due to a stretch of projected good weather, and it basically takes them two full days to get it completed. The dirt was covered all winter long, so no snow or other moisture penetrated it prior to application. With dry dirt during the application process, they have actually had to apply some water to the dirt in order to properly roll it in and pack it. They plan to firm it up in case rainy weather hits between now and opening night in hopes that any heavy rain will mostly run off. Barring adverse weather, it is looking good for racing action at Elko Speedway on April 14-16. Ron Bernhagen and Joe Kouba have been receiving phone calls from several sprint car teams out of our immediate area expressing interest in attending the Spring Nationals. I am hopeful that a decent field of cars will be on hand for the WISSOTA program on Thursday night April 14 and for the April 15-16 events.
