CALIFORNIA, Mo. – Continuing his roll through the sweltering Missouri summer, Sedalia native Jonathan Cornell snagged his ninth and tenth victories of the season over the past weekend. Though he had to work feverishly for the triumph on Saturday night at Randolph County Raceway in Moberly, the Sunday night win at Cornell’s home track, Double-X Speedway in California, was more of the same, as he has won all but two starts at the quarter-mile this season.

A lowly pill draw for the ASCS Warrior Region event at Randolph County’s 4/10-mile oval meant he’d be starting seventh in his eight-lap heat race. However the veteran used poise to move through the field to finish in third. In the top-eight redraw for the main event lineup, Cornell picked the “4,” so he’d line up outside of row two.

Early in the feature, Cornell faced opposition from Warrior region stalwarts Cody Baker and Danny Thoman, but he dispatched those contenders and began to work on Randy Martin for the lead in a few short laps. A mid-race caution and subsequent restart was just what Cornell needed; heading to the high line on the restart, Cornell rocketed his No. 28 Kiowa Line Builders Maxim past Martin for the lead, and ultimately the victory. As a makeup race from the Independence Day weekend event taken by rain, Cornell captured the increased winner’s share, a payday of $1776.

The Sunday night portion of the weekend helped Cornell bolster his points lead in the Double-X Speedway standings, just as he had the night before in the ASCS Warrior Region points. From the pole of heat one at Double-X, Cornell took off and won handily.

The heat victory earned Cornell and his crew the pole position for the main event. Clicking off laps with a torrid pace, he quickly caught the rear of the field on lap six. Pressing on through traffic, he stretched his lead to nearly half a lap in the late portion of the race. Caution-free until the final corner, Cornell took the win as the red and checkered flags waved simultaneously. The win carries a streak of six consecutive victories at the speedway into the 14th Annual “Clyde Wood Memorial,” which Cornell has won in each of the two seasons, and he hopes to make it a three-peat for $2500 this Sunday night.
