Chase Viebrock With Exciting Last Lap Pass For First Win

Hibbing, MN

For the second consecutive night, a young driver earned his first-ever sprint car feature win. On Saturday night July 5 at the Hibbing Raceway, young Chase Viebrock from New Richmond, Wisconsin slowly tracked down race leader and Friday night winner Jake Kouba in order to set the stage for a thrilling final lap. Viebrock dove low in turn three, slid up next to Kouba without any contact, and raced off turn four to the checkers to record the first win in just his tenth career start behind the wheel of a UMSS Traditional sprint car. Viebrock and members of his famous racing family celebrated in the Anderson's Pure Maple Syrup and Rock Auto Victory Lane to kick off the annual Northern Tour on what turned out to be a very well-prepared racing surface at Hibbing with cooperative weather to boot.

With Kouba and Viebrock picking up wins in the heat races, it was Viebrock earning the right to pull the invert pill at the draw during the popular driver autograph session. Right down in front of the crowd, Viebrock pulled the six pill. This put fellow rookie racer Mike Walters and Johnny Parsons III on the front row for the 25 lap feature. Parsons led the opening two circuits around the 1/3 mile dirt oval before Jake Kouba took command up front. Kouba opened up a rather large lead, as the laps rolled by under green. When Viebrock finally got by Parsons for the runner-up spot past the halfway mark, it looked like he would need a caution to close the margin that Kouba had built. Slowly but surely, Viebrock began to reel Kouba in. With no yellow flag to accomplish his desired task, Viebrock was still several car lengths behind Kouba at the white flag. Viebrock closed the margin off turn two down the back stretch and charged hard into turn three for a "slide job" on the leader. Viebrock knew he could not clear Kouba, so he pinched his car sideways just below Kouba who was on the cushion. Kouba lifted for a brief moment which allowed the pair to race off turn four. Viebrock pulled off a narrow victory for the win. Kouba had to settle for second followed by Parsons, point leader Cam Schafer, and career TSCS feature win leader Rob Caho, Jr. in the top five. The 25 lap feature ran nonstop.

The TSCS sprints then headed south to the Proctor Speedway on Sunday July 6 to complete their three race weekend and double header Northern Tour.
