Brandt Best in Iowa, Wins at Clay County Fair Speedway

Scott Brandt of Andover, MN became the inaugural winner of the first-ever appearance in the state of Iowa for the UMSS Traditional Sprint Car Series on Friday evening September 15 at the Clay County Fair Speedway in Spencer. Brandt won for the second time this season and second time in a Traditional sprint car when he led all 20 laps on his way to a $500 payday. Brandt was all smiles in Rock Auto Victory Lane, topping a field of sixteen non-winged sprints. Ten UMSS Traditional sprint cars and six Heartland Racing Association sprint cars competed together on the 3/8th mile dirt oval. HRA driver Alex Schriever finished a close second behind Brandt.

Two heat races were run with the usual passing and finishing points awarded to the drivers. Schriever and Bryan Roach topped the heats. The top four drivers in points redrew for starting positions in the first two rows of the feature. Brandt and Mike Mueller would occupy the front row with Schriever and Roach in row two.

Brandt immediately blasted to the early lead, settling in on his favorite bottom lane. Schriever was quickly up to second and put the pressure on Brandt on several occasions throughout the feature event. The race was only slowed once under caution for a spin in turn one with just one lap in. Despite the pressure from Schriever, Brandt was able to hold him off over the course of the 20 lap main event for the victory. Finishing behind Schriever was Jimmy Kouba, Mueller and Brandon Stevenson. The car advancing the most positions by far was 15th starter Jon Lewerer with a +9 to finish in sixth. Rounding out the top ten cars was Jeff Pellersels, Roach, Brad Peterson and Clinton Bruns. Only two cars dropped out of the race with eleven cars still on the lead lap at the checkers.

The Traditional sprints were scheduled to close out their season on Saturday, September 16 at the Deer Creek Speedway near Spring Valley, but rainy weather forced the cancellation of the event. Thus, the season unfortunately ended with a rain out. Mike Mueller earned his first UMSS Traditional Sprint Car Series championship. Brad Peterson was the top rookie driver, earning the GRP Motorsports Rookie of the Year Award in the Traditional sprints for 2017. A total of ten different drivers picked up feature wins during the 2017 season with Jeremy Kerzman leading the way with five wins. 2017 TSCS Champion Mike Mueller had four wins. The UMSS wishes to thank all drivers, crew members, fans, officials, tracks and sponsors for their support during the 2017 racing season.
