Dereck Ramirez passes 14 cars in Masters finale at Cedar Lake
Dereck Ramirez was one of 65 United States Racing Association (USRA) Modifieds on hand at Cedar Lake Speedway (New Richmond, Wis.) on Thursday afternoon to lift the lid of the 22nd annual Masters weekend. With a sixth-place finish in his heat race delegating him into the B-Main, Ramirez fell short of a transfer spot into the $3,000-to-win A-Main with an eighth-place outing.
On Friday evening as the remainder of the weekend shifted under the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) banner, Dereck jumped up one spot in his heat race to pick up the eight-lap victory. With $5,000 on the line in the feature, Ramirez led the first four circuits until handing over the top spot to Jimmy Mars. After regaining it five laps later, Dereck took command for the next 18 circuits when A.J. Diemel powered head on lap 28 to assume command. He went on to finish second behind Diemel with Rodney Sanders, Jake O’Neil, and Cory Mahder rounding out the Top-5. (Tyler Rinken photo)
For the finale on Saturday, Ramirez followed up a third-place finish in his heat with a runner-up outing in his B-Main. Starting the $10,000-to-win A-Main in 18th, Dereck marched through the field 14 spots in the 50-lapper to register an impressive fourth place finish. He followed Jake O’Neil, Tanner Mullens, and Rodney Sanders across the line with Jake Timm coming in fifth.
Dereck holds a 39-point advantage over Rodney Sanders atop the latest USMTS point standings.
