Mod Wars Night 1 in the Books with Dave Cain Taking the Win.

By: Tami Jo Kuehn

Ogilvie, MN (July 14) – Thursday night kicked off night one of Mod Wars at Wagamon’s Ogilvie Raceway. In addition to the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, Mod Fours and Hornets, the WISSOTA Modifieds raced head-to-head with the USMTS Modifieds. 112 drivers signed in to battle and even with mother nature knocking on the door, the race night was completed with Dave Cain, David Swearingen, Dustin Holtquist and Mac Johnston taking wins.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds took the clay with Jake Smith and Shane Sabraski on the front row. Smith claimed the immediate lead, however after a few laps David Swearingen slid into the top point. The race had passed the halfway mark when a caution slowed the field. Swearingen led them back to green and Sabraski had Cody Lee knocking on his door for second. Lee and Sabraski ran side by side until Lee nosed ahead with the point. Cody Lee held the second point as the checkers waved with Shane Sabraski, Jason VandeKamp and Zach Benson in top points while David Swearingen took the win.

With weather in the radar, the WISSOTA Modifieds vs. USMTS Modifieds feature was raced next. Tyler Wolff and Dave Cain brought the drivers around the Big O, and as the green waved, drivers raced three wide for positions. Wolff snagged the early lead; Cain ran second with Landon Atkinson and Lucas Schott in a fight for third. Shane Sabraski tried to join the battle for third but Schott moved forward and worked Cain for second. A couple cautions kept the drivers at a stop and go pace, but as the green reappeared, Wolff was in command. Laps clicked by and drivers settled into positions as Wolff caught slower drivers. With four laps to go, Wolff made contact with a lapped driver causing them both to spin. Wolff was charged for the caution and Cain assumed the lead. With few laps to go, Dave Cain held the top position and took the checkers with Dustin Sorensen, Lucas Schott, Shane Sabraski and Dereck Ramirez rounding out the top five points.

Dean Larson and Tommy Pogones brought the WISSOTA Mod Fours to the stand and Pogones nosed out the lead. A caution slowed the drivers but Pogones and Robert Holtquist were door to door as the race resumed. The Mod Fours’ feature had four more cautions, and at the race’s completion, Dustin Holtquist took the win. Remaining top points went to Tommy Pogones, Robert Holtquist, Tommy Bawden and Dean Larson.

The WISSOTA Hornets wrapped up the night’s races with Mac Johnston in the lead. Joe Wilber, Marcus Ammerman and Rachel Boston were three wide for second as a caution occurred. As the race resumed, drivers were nearly three wide in the turns while Ammerman slid into second. Wilber ran third but felt the pressure of Colton Trembath and Boston on his bumper. Trembath moved forward and took the third point while Ammerman tried to reel in Johnston. The top two drivers had a solid lead established as the checkers were raised. Mac Johnston led the race’s entirety and took the win followed by Marcus Ammerman, Colton Trembath, Joe Wilber and Jamie Ammerman as the top five drivers.
