Brady Bacon – It’s Bacon at Macon!
(Bill W) May 22, 2013 – Brady Bacon picked up a well needed win on Saturday night in Scott Ronk’s #99 midget at the Macon Speedway in Macon, Illinois in POWRi action. He added a solid finish in the Hoffman Racing #69 machine with USAC Friday night at the “Larry Rice Classic” in Bloomington, Indiana, and appeared headed for a win Sunday night in the Wilke-Pak midget at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin before mechanical ills sidelined him there. Four races are planned this week, starting with tonight’s 43rd Annual Tony Hulman Classic at the Terre Haute Action Track in Indiana.
Last Friday’s USAC event at Bloomington started well with the quick time of the night. “It was pretty dry,” says Brady. “I think they thought they were going to get some rain. We came out later and we were able to get quick time.”
The Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver was able to drive from sixth to second in the heat. “We kind of got bottled up most of the race, but we were able to get up to second,” says Brady. “A path cleared for me there the last few laps.”
Brady battled in the top five for most of the main event after starting sixth. “It got quite a bit slicker,” he says. “I got to fourth and that’s where I ran pretty much the whole time. I actually got going pretty well. The track started taking rubber off of turn two and I kind of found it. I actually passed Chase Stockon (for third), but the yellow came out and that kind of showed him the way.”
He was a victim of the racetrack and his tires at that point. “My tires got too hot after that,” says Brady. “We were kind of riding around the bottom in fourth, and Brady Short snuck by us on the last lap. We ended up fifth.”
Brady and the Hoffman team are aiming for their first win of the season tonight in Terre Haute. “We tried some different things in the feature that didn’t quite work,” says Brady. “We’re definitely making some progress. In our terms we’re struggling, but we’re still finishing in the top five.”
Brady drove for Scott Ronk in the #99 midget at Macon on Saturday, and things started with a second place heat run from outside row four. Forty-three midgets were signed in. “We had some mechanical issues at the beginning of the night, but we got it all fixed before the heat,” he says. “We were able to pick our way up to second from eighth in the heat. A couple of cautions helped us out. The car was really good all night.”
The finish put Brady on the outside of row one for the feature. “Christopher Bell got out to the lead early before he spun out in three and four,” he says. “From there on out, we led the rest of the way. Tyler Thomas slid us a couple of times on the restarts, but there really wasn’t anything on the top of turn two so I could turn back under him. Once we got rolling and I figured how hard I needed to run the track, I think we got out there a ways.”
Brady was appreciative of Ronk’s efforts running two cars at Macon. “It was a little extra work for Scott (Ronk) and those guys to let me run the car, but I think it paid off,” he says. “Parker (Price-Miller) was able to make the feature too. I’d like to thank them for the extra work they put in.”
It was on to Angell Park Sunday in the Wilke-Pak machine. “It rained about 3:00 p.m. for about 30 minutes,” says Brady. “The track was really heavy for the heat race. We started fifth and finished third.”
Starting up front, Brady shot out to a lead and appeared to be headed for another win. “We had about half a track lead on them (by lap 19), and ended up having an engine problem,” he laments. “That was unfortunate. We could have had a couple of wins for the weekend. It didn’t happen that way.”
In addition to tonight’s “Tony Hulman Classic”, Brady has three events planned in the Brady Bacon Racing #99 winged sprint. Saturday and Sunday will find him at the Fremont Speedway in Ohio with the All Stars, before heading down to Lawrenceburg, Indiana on Monday to compete with the World of Outlaws.
