Joey Moughan – A Look Back, A Look Ahead!
(Bill W) November 4, 2014 – For someone with over two hundred wins in his racing career, Joey Moughan’s 2014 season may have been overwhelmed with frustration. Though there were times when things went south for the young Springfield, Illinois driver, he emerged with a career-best second place standing in the Midwest Open Wheel Association point standings at season’s end. Five second place finishes at five different tracks with the series left a bit of a bad taste for Joey, but he is ready to rebound in 2015 as he enters the offseason.

The lack of trips to Victory Lane didn’t mean Joey wasn’t fast. “We had a lot of seconds,” he says. “That was frustrating, but towards the end of the season in my car, I felt we were running really well. We suffered a few engine troubles, but when we were running, we were running towards the front. We just didn’t get everything in line that you need to pull out a win. In MOWA, there is good competition, night in and night out.”

Joey showed his versatility, driving four different cars in MOWA competition. He added starts in different cars in 360 and midget competition as well. “We contended for wins pretty much every night we were out there,” he says. “I was able to hop in different cars and we still had some success. It’s all about building my own program up right now. It was the first year we’ve really chased the MOWA championship, and we finished second to Jerrod (Hull). He does a great job, and has been doing it a while. I hope that can be us next year or a couple years down the road.”

There won’t be much rest. He will see action in the midgets in December and January. He hopes to improve on a career-best B main finish at the Chili Bowl. “I’m going to be running a midget for Kenny Brown indoors at DuQuoin in December with POWRi,” says Joey. “We’re also hooking up for the Chili Bowl. We’ll be running a Boss Chassis utilizing AED Motorsports Docol R8 tubing in Tulsa. I’m really excited about that.”

Recently, Joey purchased a Silver Crown car with his father and Uncle Mark Moughan. “That’s going to be a blast,” he says. “I’m really looking forward to that. I’ve been fortunate to drive for a couple of other guys in the past at Springfield and DuQuoin. It’s exciting to have our own car. It’ll be great racing for my Dad and my uncle Mark. That’s something I haven’t done a whole lot of.”

He plans to make a few starts with USAC in 2015. “I don’t know that we’ll chase Silver Crown points, but we’ll definitely run Springfield, DuQuion and the Indy Mile,” says Joey. “We’d definitely like to run at Eldora in the Four Crown. We’ll see how it goes. There’s something about living in Springfield and growing up here going to the Springfield Mile. Just waiting in line at five in the morning to roll your car in gives me chills.”
