Mark Dobmeier – Huset’s All Star Win; Looking to Turn It Around!

August 23, 2013 – The last couple of weeks for the Lunstra Motorsports team hasn’t gone the way they have wanted. A frustrating week at the Knoxville Nationals has led to a couple of rare DNF’s for their driver, Mark Dobmeier. Sandwiched in the bad luck was a dominating performance at Huset’s Speedway to snatch a $5,000 win against the All Stars.

The biggest night in all of sprint car racing, the 53rd Annual FVP Knoxville Nationals, saw Dobmeier starting tenth in the night’s Last Chance Showdown. After moving up a couple spots on the start, the Senske & Son Transfer #13 had to make evasive actions to avoid getting into a sideway Tim Kaeding. That resulted in him taking his car down through the infield berm off of turn two and losing multiple spots. Unfortunately, the action would stay green and the team’s Nationals were essentially over.

“Tim and Craig (Dollansky) were ahead of me and I pretty much had nowhere to go other than the bottom to avoid getting into them,” Dobmeier said. “It was kind of like the Dukes of Hazard going down there kicking up all that dust and off-roading it. The race stayed green and we lost all those spots.”

The team had a tough decision a couple of nights before to decide to stay where they were and start tenth in the ‘B’ or start over and fight for one of four spots in Friday’s feature to try to get locked in Saturday’s feature.

“It was a tough decision at the time,” he said. “We felt like we had a good enough car to get up to a transfer spot with 22 laps, but we also can look back and think maybe we could have run Friday night and got one of those four spots.”

The night after the Nationals, it was up to Huset’s to take on the All Stars. “Dynamite” would qualify fifth out of the 23 cars signed in and that help set up the rest of the night. After getting through the heat, a lucky fan would draw Mark’s dash starting spot, which turned out to be second. He would go on and win the dash and start on the pole for the 30-lap feature. The Sioux Falls Ford Eagle ran off to an early lead and held off the rest of the field to capture his second career All Star win, both of those coming at Huset’s. The win was also the 13th on the year for the team, and his 52nd career at the short track.

“All around team effort to get the win,” Dobmeier said. “To put the Nationals behind us and come out like we did to get the win shows what my guys are about. We were clicking all night and got the job done.”

Last Friday the Outlaws intruded Mark’s hometown of Grand Forks, ND for the second time on the year. A strong field of 43 cars signed in with Mark going out late in qualifying, it resulted in being 21st quick and missing the heat race inversion. He would drive to finish fourth in his heat from sixth to lock him into the feature. That would line up the Big Trucks by Jimco Eagle 19th for the feature and that is where Dobmeier finished.

“I really wanted to put on a show and get up to the front,” Dobmeier said. “The bottom was just too good all night long. It was like the top and the bottom were equally good, but if you got off the bottom you would lose that inside position. It was definitely not the result we want to have when the Outlaws come to town.”

Last weekend finished off with a regular show at Huset’s with Knoxville having their off-week. Mark would qualify second out of the 13 cars in attendance and would also finish second in his heat race. He would start fifth in the feature and was chasing Scott Winters for the majority of the race. After cutting the lead down to a half a second with three laps to go a wreck happened right in front of the Dammer Trucking #13. Winters was lapping Lynton Jeffrey and got sideways and those two got together leaving Dobmeier nowhere to go. All three cars were done for the night.

“Just one of those racing deals,” Dobmeier said about the incident. “Scott was fast all race long and we were reeling him in was planning on going to the bottom of three and four to pass him on that lap, but the wreck happened instead. We’ll be ready to go for this weekend to get a couple more wins hopefully.”

The team will be running their usual schedule of River Cities on Friday, Knoxville on Saturday for their Season Championship, and Huset’s on Sunday to wrap up the weekend.
