Inside Line Promotions – TULARE, Calif. (March 18, 2015) – Race results are the last thing on Dominic Scelzi’s mind following a scary weekend.

Scelzi sustained second and third-degree burns on his left leg following a mechanical issue that caused a fire last Saturday at Thunderbowl Raceway during the finale of the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series and King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series co-sanctioned doubleheader.

“I can’t thank the safety crew enough for getting to me so quickly and I can’t thank Sparco enough for having the best suits and underwear on the market,” he said.

Scelzi was closing out a challenging weekend when the fire occurred. He had qualified 31st quickest before placing seventh during both a heat race and the Last Chance Showdown on Friday, and he got off to a slow start by timing in 42nd quickest during qualifying on Saturday.

However, the Roth Motorsports backed team began to make headway during a heat race, where Scelzi powered from 11th to seventh.

“We were extremely fast in the heat race,” he said. “I was able to get through the guys. I had the second or third fastest lap of the heat race. We just ran out of laps.”

Scelzi missed a lock-in position to the feature by only two positions and he was relegated to the C Main.

“I had a good start and worked my way into fourth place before a yellow came out,” he said. “Then I slid for third and was trying for second, but just couldn’t quite get there. We had a mechanical problem going into turn three on the last lap and I caught on fire.”

Scelzi pulled to a stop on the frontstretch, where the safety crew quickly arrived.

“I got the car stopped on the frontstretch, hopped out and rolled around on the ground,” he said. “The safety crew did a really good job. And for the amount of time that I was on fire my Sparco suit worked far past its expectations.”

Scelzi has visited with doctors this week and is waiting to make a decision whether to compete this Saturday and Sunday at Stockton Dirt Track in Stockton, Calif., for the FVP Western Spring Shootout with the World of Outlaws.
