Jay Russell Takes Historic Win at Shelby County Speedway!

Shelby County Speedway Harlan, Iowa (June 29, 2019)—For the first time in 46 years, sprint cars took to the high banks of Shelby County Speedway in Harlan, Iowa. Seventeen cars made their way into the pits on an extremely hot and steamy night in west central Iowa. It was Elwood, Kansas’, Jay Russell, who didn’t think his luck was on his side as multiple problems followed him just after leaving home Saturday afternoon.

“We left the house today and blew an oil line off of the truck, lost the generator and air conditioner, but we came up and it all finally paid off. I was worried about tire wear to start the feature and we put two new ones on and I thought I would make it until I saw Frank Galusha blow a right rear. I was getting a little worried then but I had to keep going. I just want to thank Klein Motors and RV, Dennis’s Auto Center, Deluxe Truck Stop, TnT Motorsports in Montgomery, Texas, Chuck’s Hair Care Center, Goodwin Tax Preparation, my cousin Tye and his wife Tracy, Fat Cat Motorsports, Ken Smith Auto Body, John Brewer, my dad and my wife. I get to work on it too but I get to do the fun part!”

The Saldana Racing Products pole winner of Jay Russel led the field to the green flag as 2nd place starter, Nathan Mills, stayed in 2nd position as Russell jumped to a 6 car lead on lap one. The battle for 5th between Jason Martin and Cody Ledger ensued for several laps but it was Martin who kept the fifth position as ledger fell back to a 3 car distance. Jay Russel caught the end of the field by lap 5 as Dover had made his way to the 2nd spot by lap 6 after starting 4th. Russell and Dover were still 1 & 2 halfway to through the feature. With 5 laps to go, Dover was working his way within 2 cars of Russell as Russell encountered more lap traffic but the yellow fell as Frank Galusha broke and came to a stop in turn two collecting Shayle Bade and John Klabunde who tried to avoid Galusha. The top 5 were Jay Russell, Jack Dover, Nathan Mills, Seth Brahmer and Jason Martin.

On the restart, Jay Russell brought the field to the green flag with Dover in tail. Russell gained a great 5 car lead with 3 to go as Jason Martin and Nathan Mills battled for third. Russell gathered a huge 12 car lead, on the last lap, to take the win outlasting Dover who finished second.

The series will take two weeks off until we resume the season on July 13 at Park Jefferson Speedway in Jefferson, South Dakota. Jason Martin was the most recent winner at Park Jefferson as he dominated the feature winner by 12 car lengths of Tyler Drueke of Eagle, Nebraska.
