MLRA SET FOR LABOR DAY TRIPLE HEADER-- RON JENKINS MEMORIAL & WIENER NATIONALS
Wheatland, Missouri (August 28, 2023) – An exciting three nights of Lucas Oil MLRA racing action is on tap for this upcoming Labor day weekend, with over $26,000 to win on the line over the course of the weekend. This weekend’s triple header will account for half of the remaining dates on the 2023 schedule and should be crucial when it comes to determining this years season long champion.
Racing will hit the track at the Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO on Friday night September 1st, for the first of two nights of racing at the track labeled the Diamond of Dirt Tracks. The 9th Annual “Ron Jenkins Memorial” Presented by Rugged Radios, expands from a single day event to a two-night showdown to honor the original builder of Wheatland Raceway. The final weekend stop of the year at the Lucas Oil Speedway will feature two complete shows, with Friday night’s opener paying $5,000 to win.
The stakes will be even higher on night # 2 of the Jenkins Memorial with not only a higher purse, but added bonuses up for grabs thanks to Mary Jenkins Holt in Memory of Ron Jenkins. The Nights overall fastest qualifier in MyRacePass Qualifying will receive a $500 bonus for their efforts. The second bonus up for grabs will put an additional $1,000 into the pocket of the feature winner, making it an $11,000 pay day to the driver sitting in Cedar Creek Beef Jerky Victory Lane at the end of the night. All 24 “A” Feature starters on Saturday night will be guaranteed $700.
The weekend will conclude with another double-digit winner’s payday on Sunday evening September 3rd, when the MLRA makes their lone visit of the year to the Moberly Motorsports Park located just outside of Moberly, Missouri for the 3rd Annual “Wiener Nationals”.
An afternoon and evening of racing and on-stage entertainment will await fans on Sunday, all leading up to the $10,000 to win 40 lap main event. For the second night in a row, Sunday’s MyRacePass overall Fastest Qualifier will earn themselves a bonus, this time in the amount of $1,000.
A season ago, Tony Jackson Jr., dominated the MLRA’s Labor Day Weekend swing though Missouri. The two-time series champion claimed MRP Quick Time honors at both Lucas Oil Speedway and Moberly Motorsports Park, and then followed that up by parking his Capital Chassis in victory lane each of those nights as well.
TURN FOUR NEWS & NOTES:
MLRA LEADERBOARD: After 13 rounds of action thus far in 2023, Chad Simpson continues to stand atop the MLRA leaderboard by 165 points while carrying the Midwest Sheet Metal spoiler on his Longhorn Chassis. The defending MLRA Champion has a pair of wins to his name already this season and will have familiar company in his rearview mirror when he pulls into Wheatland, that being his brother Chris Simpson. Chris was able to close ground in the title chase and moved into second last month thanks to a strong 5th place run in the Diamond Nationals.
Garrett Alberson is still searching for his first MLRA win of the year and sits just 30 back of Chris Simpson for the 2nd spot, while Sunoco Rookie of the Year leader Dillon McCowan comes into the weekend in fourth. Earlham Iowa’s Daniel Hilsabeck completes the top five in the season long standings.
MD3 HARD CHARGER AWARD: Jeff Herzog and Ricky Thornton Jr. sit tied atop the season long MD3 Hard Charger Standings, each with 2 Hard Charger of the Race Awards. Other notable MLRA drivers with one Hard Charger Award thus far include point leader Chad Simpson, Tyler Stevens, and Justin Duty, along with Oakwood IL’s Bobby Pierce who is expected to make his final MLRA start of the season in Sunday’s Weiner Nationals. The driver atop the standings at the end of the season will receive a $500 award from MD3.
