Cottage Grove, Oregon- Cottage Grove Speedway would host the second leg of the 2016 Speedweek Northwest schedule. It was another Independence Day thriller at CGS with the best car count of the week as well as a packed grandstand to watch the Monday July 4th action. Thirty-three cars were in attendance representing the states of Oregon, Washington, California, and Idaho as well as the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia and even a driver from the Southland region of New Zealand.

Roger Crockett would get out to the lead on the opening lap. The Medford driver started from the pole and was extremely quick from the get go. With a long green flag run it brought lapped traffic into the mix but Crockett would handle the slower cars extremely well.

A lap thirteen caution would bunch the field up and another yellow occurred on the nineteenth circuit, which would be the final stoppage of the race. Shortly after the restart Roger Crockett would have a little bit of difficulty making it around a lapped car which brought about an opportunity for him to be challenged.

Paradise, California’s Kyle Hirst made it around Crockett on lap twenty-five and looked to close out the race as the leader. Crockett reeled Hirst back in and at the drop of the white flag Hirst still possessed the coveted position. Both drivers would battle it out in lapped traffic on the final circuit.

Hirst had the advantage going into turns three and four. But coming out of the final bend Crockett would thread the needle underneath Hirst and edge him out for the victory. It marked the second consecutive win in the 2016 Speedweek for Crockett, the twenty-first Speedweek triumph of his career, and his seventh Speedweek triumph at CGS.

Kyle Hirst, driving for Scott and Jason Finley, was second followed by Visalia, Califronia driver Steven Tiner. Completing the top five finishing order included Cory Eliason, also from Visalia and driving for Harley Van Dyke, in fourth while fifth went to Trey Starks of Puyallup, Washington in the Doug and Kathy Rutz entry.

With so many cars the field was split into two groups for time trials. Kyle Hirst and Roger Crockett were the fastest cars in their respective groups. Heat race winners were Robbie Price of Cobble Hill, British Columbia, Steven Tiner, Eugene’s Kyle Miller, and Jason Solwold of Burlington, Washington. Miller was driving for car owner Kady Adelman while Solwold was in the familiar Mike Anderson machine.

Roger Crockett would earn the pole after capturing the win in the trophy dash. Raquel Ivie of Eugene would win the evening’s B Main.
