Inside Line Promotions – BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Oct. 10, 2018) – Dominic Scelzi charged into Victory Lane only three races into his return from a fracture in his leg.
Scelzi kicked off the special night last Friday at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, Calif., by qualifying second quickest out of 21 competitors. He then advanced from fourth to third place in a heat race to lock into the dash.
“We went out a little late in qualifying, which wasn’t that bad of a deal,” he said. “In the heat race it was locked down around the bottom. I knew I didn’t need to push it so we just took what we could get. Then we finished sixth in the dash to line up sixth for the main event.
“We were in fifth by the flagstand. We went through turns one and two and I was next to Justin Sanders for fourth. We cleared him in the next two corners. The guy in third hit the wall and I got by him before the guy in second got tight on the cushion and I got by him. The next lap I slid Brad Furr and we went uncontested.”
Scelzi took the lead around the midpoint of the feature and he cruised to his sixth triumph of the season and second career victory at Ocean Speedway. Here is a link to watch the feature: https://youtu.be/F7h4O5T1_QE.
“It was awesome,” he said. “It felt really good to get the win. It gives us good momentum going into the next two weeks of huge races with the Cotton Classic and Trophy Cup. I was happy with my performance and the car was as fast as you can get one.”
Last weekend wrapped up on Saturday at Kern County Raceway Park with the King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Series. Scelzi timed in second quickest during qualifying before advancing from fourth to second place in a heat race.
“We went out pretty late again in qualifying,” he said. “The track slowed down, but it didn’t matter. I ran through the middle in the heat and we got to second. That put us as the high points guy, but the inversion was six so I had to start the dash sixth.”
Scelzi gained a position in the dash to finish fifth.
“There was a big crash that moved us up to third on the start of the A Main,” he said. “Then me and Bud Kaeding battled for second from around Lap 10 to Lap 24. He got over the cushion off turn two and came down the track. I had nowhere to go and we made contact and spun to a stop.
“You’re frustrated because I felt like we had a shot at winning the race, but at the end of the day we’re racing for wins and podiums. We’ve been extremely competitive and have had a race car that could win so I’m extremely happy.”
Scelzi rebounded from the late incident to post a seventh-place result. Here is a link to watch the race: https://youtu.be/LSHwH8jYu24.
Scelzi will compete in both the 410ci and 360ci winged sprint car divisions this Saturday at Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford, Calif., during the 33rd annual Cotton Classic.
