Inside Line Promotions – BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Oct. 7, 2019) – Sometimes a trip home is exactly what is needed.
Such was the case last Saturday for Dominic Scelzi, who dominated during a return to his home state by winning the King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Series event at The Dirt Track at Kern County Raceway Park in impressive fashion.
Scelzi and Roth Motorsports were efficient throughout the night, qualifying sixth quickest before winning every race they entered. Scelzi captured both a heat race and the dash after starting second and he won the A Main from the pole.
“We had a little issue in qualifying running out of fuel, but we were able to still be sixth quick,” he said. “In the heat the inside row got the jump. I got to the bottom and Chase (Johnson) missed the bottom. We got by him for the lead and then ran the bottom the rest of the way and won that. I chose the outside for the main event and it played out how the dash did. We were side by side through turns one and two and I got the lead off turn four on the first lap. We won by almost five seconds. It was really good. I felt like we were the best car there early in the year when we went there and we were the best car on Saturday. We put ourselves in the right position and we went unchallenged. To win races like that it’s a big confidence booster.”
The win was Scelzi’s fifth of the season with the series and eighth career, moving him into a tie with Kyle Larson and Willie Croft.
“My goal going into the year was winning four series races,” Scelzi said. “To surpass it and tie guys like Willie and Kyle means a lot. Being my first full year with the series I’m really happy with what we’ve done.”
The victory moved Scelzi within eight points of the lead in the series championship standings with only two races remaining. The next event is this Saturday at Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford, Calif., for the Cotton Classic. He will be in action in both the King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Series and Sprint Car Challenge Tour divisions.
“It’s a race that I’d absolutely love to win,” he said. “We led in 2017 and I felt like we were the best car there. Then we blew the driveline out of it. That race is pretty historic and one I’d like to win. I think I’ve got three or four wins there so we know we can get the job done there.”
