Brockhouse Wins Beaver Dam Opener
While this past Saturday (4/28/18) wasn’t a WLRDS points night, the Beaver Dam opener still saw an impressive 22 cars check in for racing action. Many points chasers such as Cody Apfelbeck, Mike Mueller, and Justin Pearson were in attendance.
The spring thaw made the ground a little softer than usual which contributed to the track developing some roughness in turns one and two. Drivers were able to avoid the ruts in the heat races and use the smooth and wide turns three and four to make passes. Cody Apfelbeck took home the first heat race win of the season after going from last to first in the eight lap heat. Minnesota travelers Baiden Heskett and Tim Brockhouse battled it out in heat number two with the 00 of Heskett coming out on top. The final heat race of the night was won by Justin Pearson but not without a good challenge from Bille Lehmann.
The Great North Legends cars of Heskett and Brockhouse started first and second, respectively, for the feature. By then the track had developed very large ruts in turns one and two which required cars to get as high on the track as they could or to get as close to the infield tires as they could. Brockhouse jumped out to an early lead when Heskett bobbled going into turn one on the first lap. After the field got bunched up the only car unable to continue was the 92 of Bill Prietzel who hit the wall at full speed but drove it back to the pits so the race remained green. Brockhouse led from flag to flag with challenges from Ryan Mech, Baiden Heskett, and Justin Pearson throughout the race. Pearson drove up to second despite the rough track conditions and was almost alongside of Brockhouse when the checkered flag flew on the first night of racing. The top five was finished out by Heskett in third, R. Mech in fourth, and Bille Lehmann in fifth.
Next week the legends series will be at Beaver Dam Raceway once again for a track points night. The first WLRDS points event will be May 19th at Beaver Dam Raceway.
