Herrera Dons Cowboy Hat Following ASCS Red River Win at Texas Motor Speedway

Inside Line Promotions – FORT WORTH, Texas (Sept. 14, 2016) – Johnny Herrera has a new accessory to wear thanks to a trip to Victory Lane last weekend.

“I got me a cowboy hat,” he beamed.

Herrera led the distance of last Saturday’s ASCS Red River Region race at Texas Motor Speedway to garner his first career triumph at the big track and take home a special hat.

“I’ve led a lot of them there and ran second a lot of times, but never was able to get it done,” he said. “We had some good cars we had to outrun, but we were good all night.”

The event began with Herrera maneuvering from seventh to third place in a heat race.

“We let them get a lap or so in and then we started picking them off,” he said. “By the time we got to third it was strung out a bit. We were a little off on the race car and didn’t feel quite right. I had the shock adjustment wrong.”

Herrera’s result was good enough to make the feature redraw, where he ended with the No. 1 to start on the pole for the main event.

“My wife, every time she draws she does good so we’re going to let her draw from now on,” he said. “She drew us a No. 1 so that was great.

“The only time I had a challenge was in the first lap or two with Wayne Johnson. We came off turn two side by side. I got the line into turn three and from there I think I saw a nose one more time on the second or third lap.”

The victory was Herrera’s fifth win of the season.

“You have to take advantage of every situation you get,” he said. “It’s a lot easier to win from the front than the back. We had a good car. We made the right decisions on the race car and on the race track.”

Herrera will take this weekend off before getting back to action Sept. 22-24 at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo., for the Hockett/McMillin Memorial with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
