Wednesdays With Wayne- Hockett/McMillin this Weekend!

After a weekend spent with the World of Outlaws, Wayne Johnson and the Two-C Racing team turn their attention back to the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series this weekend. The three-night Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial awaits at Lucas Oil Speedway near Wheatland, Missouri.

Last Friday night, the WoO visited the Clay County Fair Speedway and the team was ready. “Our 410 program has really been pretty decent this year,” says Wayne. “We timed in seventh quick on Friday and ran third in the heat. The car really felt good.”

Starting 11th in the feature, Wayne moved forward early on. “We made it up to seventh early on there,” he says. “At that point, we kind of lost some grip. I don’t know if the tires sealed up, or I got them hot. I just lost all the grip. We backed up to ninth or tenth and had a caution.”

The handling issue didn’t improve after the caution. “Madsen was on the inside of me on the restart, and when he got on the gas, he got a big push,” says Wayne. “That shoved me out of the groove and got me all messed up. I fell back to 14th or 15th and didn’t have any grip anyway. That’s when I pulled in.”

The rains in the Midwest didn’t escape US36 Raceway near Cameron, Missouri on Saturday. Wayne would time in 20th with the WoO, and needed a second place finish in the B to qualify for the main. “It was so heavy and rough,” he says. “Really, we were just trying to get into the feature and get through the night. We really collected our $800 and went home to be honest. We wanted to be smart about things. We weren’t going to drive up through there…no one was. There wasn’t any passing.”

The format for the Hockett/McMillin Memorial has changed, and the event has been expanded to three days, Thursday through Saturday. “We’re heading out today for Wheatland,” says Wayne. “It’s a three-night show this year, which is a little different. They’re doing a points system, so you want to do well every time you’re out on the track. That puts you in position for Saturday.”
