Crate Racin' USA Dirt Late Model Series
THE BATTLE FOR THE NEWSOME RACEWAY PARTS CUP ROLLS THROUGH TST
ADAIRSVILLE, GA – The road to the 2020 Newsome Raceway Parts Cup and the $10,000 check that goes with it rolls through Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL for Rounds 12 and 13 of the 2020 season this Friday night and Saturday night. The Friday night show will pay $2,000-to-win in the 40-lap Main Event, and the Saturday night race pays $2,500-to-win in the 50-lap Main Event.
For two Newsome Raceway Parts Crate Racin’ USA Dirt Late Model Series title contenders, a borrowed Charles Dickens penned phrase comes into play in that it is the best of times and the worst of times.
For point leader Wil Herrington of Hawkinsville, GA it could be the best of times. He is fresh off his fourth win of the season last Saturday night at Needmore Speedway in Norman Park, GA not far from his Peach State Homebase. But as he heads for the “Hornet’s Nest” this weekend, it could be the worst of times, as Talladega Short Track has not been Herrington’s favorite track.
“In two years of following this series, Talladega Short Track has not been one of our best tracks, but I think we’re getting better,” Herrington said. “Since we’ve got this new Rocket for the 2020 season, we have seemed to have gotten better everywhere, including Talladega Short Track. We had a fifth-place finish there on July 3, and we’ve got a good point lead going in there.”
For championship contender Cruz Skinner of Oxford, AL, he is trying to shake off the worst of times. Skinner was forced to miss the last race at Needmore Speedway and fell from second to third in the National point standings, 128 points behind Herrington.
But this weekend could be the best of times for “The Cruz Missile.” Talladega Short Track is Skinner’s home track, a track the 17-year-old driver has been racing dirt late models since he was 12 years old. Skinner has a Newsome Raceway Parts Crate Racin’ USA career win at Talladega Short Track, and finished second there on July 3 to Scott Knowles of Lanett, AL.
Right in the middle of the Championship drama is Corey Dunn of Milledgeville, GA. Dunn is second in the Newsome Raceway Parts Crate Racin’ USA Dirt Late Model Series National point standings, 94 points behind Herrington. Dunn is also the Cruise With The Champions Rookie of the Year point leader.
T.J. Brittain of Centre, AL is fourth in the standings and is just 18 points behind Skinner. Jody Knowles of Tyrone, GA is in the fifth spot. Also expected for this NASCAR Weekend Double-Header are Cody Overton of Evans, GA, Troy Dixon of Dallas, GA, Trynt Lloyd of Jacksonville, FL and Parker Martin of Milledgeville, GA who are sixth through ninth respectively in the points chase.
The top drivers from six different states are expected this Friday night and Saturday night at Talladega Short Track, including several Newsome Raceway Parts Crate Racin’ USA Weekly Racing Series Late Model competitors, who will have an opportunity to compete for Week 18 points in the 22-week season.
One of those competitors will be making his return to action at Talladega Short Track, and that is the “Ageless Wonder” Red Farmer of Hueytown, AL, who will celebrate his 88th birthday on October 15. Farmer, who has started seven Newsome Raceway Parts Crate Racin’ USA Weekly Racing Series Late Model races at Talladega Short Track this season with three top ten finishes, is like a Timex Watch because he takes a lickin’ and keeps on tickin’!
Farmer is fresh off a bout with COVID 19 and leaves behind a lengthy hospital stay and a 105-degree fever. Farmer said he is feeling like he needs to get back in his familiar white, red and gold #F97 dirt late model and see what he can do after spending the last couple of weeks recovering at home.
