Taylor Earns First Career Non-Wing Sprint Car Win During Debut
Inside Line Promotions – CALHAN, Colo. (April 29, 2019) – Zac Taylor began his sprint car season in unfamiliar territory last Saturday.
Not only was he in a 360ci powered sprint car – he drove mainly midgets and 305ci winged sprint cars in 2018 – but he was also in a non-wing sprint car for the first time. Taylor adapted very quickly and he scored the feature win at El Paso County Raceway while competing with the Lucas Oil POWRi Warrior Sprint Series.
It was Taylor’s first race since the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Midget Nationals in January.
“We really didn’t know what to expect,” he said. “I thought it would be really, really different, but it kind of felt like a midget just bigger.”
Taylor started last in his heat race and finished fifth.
“I got stuck behind a slower car who was like a dart without feathers,” he said. “I didn’t want to tear the car up in the heat so I just followed him. We turned more RPMs than we wanted in the heat due to wheel spin so we changed the gear, put on different shocks, a bigger tire and made some weight adjustments for the feature.”
Taylor started fifth in the main event and moved into second early. He rode there for most of the race.
“With about five laps to go I took the lead just before the caution came out,” he said. “When we went back to green it was clear sailing to the checkers. I earned the Hard Charger Award, too.
“Hopefully that’s just the start of more wins in the 360 sprint and hopefully in the midget this season.”
Taylor will continue his growth in racing by competing in a full-bodied modified on asphalt this Saturday at I-25 Speedway in Pueblo, Colo.
“We got to race that car a couple of times last year,” he said. “It teaches me to be smooth and how to save tires and brakes for the end of a race. My goal is to get as much experience in different cars as possible. We plan to be back in Todd Henry’s midget on May 18.”
