Sabraski Sweeps Supers and Tops Mod Field at Wisconsin Mod Nationals
SUPERIOR, Wisc. (05/27/23) - The fourth running of the Wisconsin Modified Nationals fueled by Superior Fuel took place on Friday, May 26th at the Gondik Law Speedway in Superior, Wisconsin under beautiful 75* sunny skies and greeted fans and drivers alike with a great event which saw Shane Sabraski race to his 830th and 831st career feature wins by winning both the WISSOTA Super Stock and Modified features for his efforts. Superior’s Cody Carlson came out of top of a dog fight in the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds to claim top honors, while Cory Jorgenson won the WISSOTA Pure Stocks and Carter Matthews topped the WISSOTA Hornets to cap off the night.
Cory Jorgensen came out as the victor after a very entertaining three-car battle at the front of the WISSOTA Pure Stock feature race between his teammate Aaron Bernick and Tyler Kachinske for the majority of the 15-lap event. Bernick lead the majority of the race with Jorgensen on his inside and Kachinske right behind. The trio circled the Gondik Law Speedway nose to tail and often side by side for the first 12 circuits until Jorgensen was able to muscle his way past and into the lead, which he would never relinquish en route to the victory. Kachinske got by Bernick and held on for second with Bernick third at the line. Ryan Kough and Travis Zembo rounded out the top five finishers.
Paul Ripley and James Vendela sat on the front row for the WISSOTA Midwest Modified main event and lead the 26-car field to the green. As the duo worked to try to assume the lead, fourth starting Zach Benson slipped by into the top spot and began to drive off from the battle just behind him. As the first half dozen laps clicked off, Benson assumed command with fifth starting Cody Carlson working into the second spot early followed by seventh starting Tony Bahr, who raced his way into the third spot early in the race as well. Things went green for the first dozen laps until the race’s first caution flew for a crash in turn one. Another caution flew for a jagged restart, which lead to a third caution on the same lap for a crash on the ensuring start. Once the field was sorted out and the race restarted, the next eight laps were very entertaining as Benson and Carlson battled hard with each other for the lead with Bahr just behind. Unfortunately for Bahr, he got sideways and turned around his #QQ on lap twenty, causing a caution. After another caution on lap 23 for a spin, the field rumbled back to green for a two-lap dash, which Carlson was able lead and race to the hometown win ahead of Vendela, who ran inside the top five all feature long and slipped by Benson late in the race. Jason Schill raced from 15th to 4th and Jason VandeKamp rounded out the top five after his 20th to 5th run, which earned him hard charger honors.
A pair of perennial front runners, Dexton Koch and Shane Sabraski sat on row one for the WISSOTA Super Stock feature with Sabraski hopping out into the initial lead at the start and pacing the field early. After the only two caution flags of the race flew on laps one and two, the remaining 23 laps went non-stop with Koch hounding Sabraski for the top spot throughout the first half of the race, but Shane was up to the challenge and was able to slowly distance himself from the field, crossing the finish line 2.473 seconds ahead of Koch, who finished nearly 6 seconds ahead of third place finishing Kyle Copp. Chasing Copp to the line were Joey Jensen in fourth and Andrew Mackey, who rounded out the top five. The win was Sabraski’s 830th career victory.
The main attraction of the night saw a field of 27 WISSOTA Modifieds rumble to the green flag for the 30-lap, $2,000 to win Wisconsin Modified Nationals feature race with Super Stock feature winner Shane Sabraski leading the field off into turn one from the pole and into the top spot. Al Uotinen slipped by Johnny Broking early into the runner up spot with Broking working to hold off Darrell Nelson, last year’s winner Brandon Copp and Mike Anderson for third. The track was wide and smooth as usual and drivers were using every inch of it searching for the fastest way around. Sabraski continued to set the pace out front with Copp pressuring Uotinen for second as the race approached the mid-point. Just past the half way mark, the first caution of the race flew on lap 18 for debris on the front stretch, which brought Sabraski back to the field and set up a fantastic last 12 laps. On the restart, Sabraski drove back out to the lead but Copp and Nelson were locked in a tight battle for second with Uotinen in tow. Broking, Mike Anderson and a charging Billy Kendall in the mix as well. Nelson cleared Copp momentarily but Brandon was able to race back by into the runner up spot and then began to drive his #22 as hard as it would let him and began to chip into Sabraski’s lead lap after lap, pulling along side the #7a on several occasions over the final few laps. Copp would make it interesting, but Sabraski would race to the finish first for his 831st career victory ahead of last year’s winner Copp, Nelson, Anderson and Broking, who completed the top five. Kendall earned hard charger honors, racing from 19th up to 6th at the checkered as well.
The WISSOTA Hornets capped off the night with Carter Matthews and Derek Dunbar pacing the field to the green flag and battling out front for the first half of the race until Matthews was able to put a slight bit of distance on Dunbar out front as the leaders worked their way through lapped traffic on front. Matthews raced away for his first win at an FYE event and first ever win at Gondik Law Speedway for his efforts with Dunbar third, ahead of Marcus Ammerman at the line. AJ House and Ryan LaBorde completed the top five finishers.

The 18th annual Wehrs Machine Minnesota Modified Nationals are up next with events on Saturday, May 27th and Sunday, May 28th at the Ogilvie Raceway in Ogilvie, MN to cap off the holiday weekend.
