Abbey picks up first Sooner Series win at Abilene
By John Rittenoure (Abilene, KS) --- Dean Abbey made a late race move into the lead and raced to the checkered to win the Complete Well Testing Sooner Late Model Series feature Saturday at Abilene Speedway.
When the green flag dropped In the co-sanctioned Sooner Late Model Series, Southern Touring Late Model Series feature, Ray Allen Kulhanek drove into the lead off the pole with Hayden Ross and Kip Hughes close behind only to see a yellow flag before the end of lap 1.
On the restart Kulhanek resumed his lead and stayed out front for most of the 30 laps. With only a couple of laps remaining 7th starting Abbey charged around Kulhanek for the lead and raced to the checkered. Defending Southern Tour champion Cody Leonard also passed Kulhanek to finish second leaving Kulhanek with third. Philllip Houston and Kaden Honeycutt finished 4th and 5th giving the Southern Tour a top five sweep.
Ross, the current Sooner Series points leader, ended up 6th at the finish with Sooner Series competitor Troy Bynum behind in 7th. Three-time defending Sooner Series champ Hughes did not finish the race and was credited with a 12th place finish.
Next up for the Sooner Late Models is the Hutchinson Grand Nationals in Hutchinson, Kansas on July 16-17.
