Branham, Heywood Claim Sportsman Mod Wins
The Ernie’s Discount Tools Sportsman Modifieds shared the spotlight with the Busch Beer Mini Modifieds at Airborne Park Speedway on Saturday, May 21, 2016. Both divisions participated in two features, with the mini mod features being scored Manza style.
Plattsburgh’s Bucko Branham took the checkers in dominating fashion in the first feature for the Sportsman Modifieds. Timex Morgan, Jamy Begor, Chris Cayea, and Jamie LaFountain completed the unofficial top 5. The second feature got off to a rough start, as several cars were involved in a turn 1 incident on lap 1. Branham, along with Rico Hernandez had significant damage and were forced to retire from the event. After an extended green flag run, Nick Heywood picked up his second checkered flag of the season. Morgan and Begor followed each other across the line again, finishing second and third respectfully. Roger LaBreche and Chris Cayea completed the top 5.
The Busch Beer Mini Modifieds ran two features with the lowest point total deciding the overall finish. Dale O’Neil won the first segment, the rest of the top 5 went to Josh LaPorte, Tim LaFountain, Jay LaGrave, and Cricket Turner. The second feature checkerd flag went to Laporte. O’Neil, Kris Clark, LaFountain, and Tyler Irwin completed the top 5. The overall winner of the event was Laporte. Second went to O’Neil and LaFountain was third.
There was plenty of action and passing in the Jeffords Steel Renegades Feature. Robert Gordon continued his winning ways as he picked up his second feature win. Gordon showed great patience as he worked his way to the front of the field using both the inside and outside grooves. When the checkerd flag flew it was Josh Terry following Gordon across the finish line for second. Third went to Richie Turner, fourth to Michael Wright, and fifth to Dylan Rabtoy.
