Wood Dominant in Return to Airborne
PLATTSBURGH- Robin Wood made the best of his return to Airborne Park Speedway in the Saint-Eustache Limited Late Model division.
The Limited Late Models ran two 20 lap segments, inverting the field after the first segment. The combined low finishing total determined the winner of the event.
Wood won his heat race and was able to start on the pole in the first segment. He quickly ran away from the field and collected a total of one point through the first segment. Martin Fauteux and Benoit Juteau finished second and third respectively.
Wood had to start at the tail of the field for the second segment. Having to show patience while working through the field, Wood found himself battling side by side with Fauteux as both drivers couldn’t find a way to get around Mathieu Kingsbury. Wood eventually prevailed on the outside groove, but his work wasn’t done yet. As Wood quickly reeled in the leader in the closing five laps, he was able to complete the cross-over move in turns one and two on the final lap to pick up the win in segment two.
Wood combined for a total score of two points and now has back to back wins in their Triple Crown. Fauteux, Joe Mayer, Remi Perrault and Benoit Juteau rounded out the overall top five.
The Ernie’s Discount Tools Sportsman Modified division saw Nick Heywood pickup his sixth win of the season. A lap-9 restart put Nick Heywood on the inside of row two and was able to work around leader Chris Cayea on lap-13. In the closing laps, Bucko Branham had a couple bids to the outside of Cayea for second, but a lap car broke the momentum that Branham has built up and forced him to settle for the third spot. Danny Sullivan and Jake Branham rounded out the top five.
Richie Turner picked up win number two of 2016 in the Jeffords Steel Renegade division. Turner had a three wide move at the midway point of the race that would give him the lead. Dylan Rabtoy in the middle and Tylor Terry on the far outside, would continue to battle for a couple laps until Rabtoy was able to pull away. Rabtoy was persistent on the inside and was able to get back by Turner just five laps later. A couple of restarts worked against Rabtoy as his car was better on longer runs compared to the restarts. Turner went on the win the double point event. Rabtoy, Robert Gordon, Tylor Terry and Jason McClatchie completed the top five.
Dale O’Neil collected his eighth win in the Busch Beer Mini Mod division. O’Neil picked up a pair of first place finishes in the two 10 lap segment events. Tim LaFountain, Josh LaPorte, Ed Bresette and Tyler Irwin completed the top five.
Racing action resumes on Saturday with a 7pm post time. Spectator races will be on the schedule for next weekend. For more information or details on the upcoming Enduro on August 21, visit airborneparkspeedway.com or Airborne Park Speedway on Facebook.
