Strictly Stock Champ: Movin’ On Up
PLATTSBURGH – Last season, Rolland Guay graduated from the Go-Kart program and began his racing career on the dirt at the 4/10 mile Airborne Park Speedway.
In his first year, the rookie put together an outstanding season, taking home the strictly stock championship. The Mooers, NY campaigner had a dream run in his first year which included four wins and thirteen top five finishes.
This season, Guay will move up into the Super Stock division. Before he takes the green flag for this year, he took time to reflect on last season in the entry level Strictly Stock class.
“I feel like the strictly stock division works very well as a starter class,” Guay said. “It’s a little easier on someone learning about competitive racing and there is close competition, which keeps teams working hard on the track and in the pits.”
While Rolland talked about how well it works as a class for those just getting into racing he also mentioned how much fun he had behind the wheel on race night.
“Driving in the strictly stock division is very fun and educational for any new driver young or old,” said Guay. “I feel like it’s a great place to get started and educate new drivers coming in and hopefully drivers will continue their careers and compete in other divisions as they make progress and improve.”
As Rolland looked back at his championship season, he also is getting ready for his first year in the Super Stock class (formerly known as the Renegade division). His approach however, is not changing at all.
“My thoughts on going into the Super Stock division didn’t change much from last year. I want to learn and become a better driver, learn what’s going on in the car and get better on the race track,” Guay explained. “I want to be able to make changes in the car, be competitive, finish races, and at least be able to keep up and make the races entertaining for fans to enjoy.”
The Northeastern Clinton Central School student is very excited about his new venture this season, as driving in the Super Stock division is something the teenager has always wanted to do.
“I’ve always liked the Renegade division (now Super Stocks) and the opportunity was there for me to drive in a class I’ve enjoyed watching, so I took it.”
Guay, along with the rest of the Super Stock division will drop the green flag on April 28th, for the sixty-fifth season opener at the Airborne Park Speedway. Post time is set for 6 P.M.
