Inside Line Promotions – GARDEN CITY, Kan. (May 31, 2017) – Zane Hendricks tied his career-best POWRi Lucas Oil West Midget Series result on Sunday during the finale of the 2nd annual Midget Round Up at Airport Raceway.
Hendricks made his debut at the track on Saturday when he placed fifth in a heat race after starting seventh.
“I was up to second in four or five laps before we ran out of fuel,” he said. “We put a bigger pill in than we normally do and miscalculated how much fuel to put in. Instead of starting on the front row of the A Main we went to the B Main.”
The B Main was postponed to Sunday afternoon because of inclement weather that invaded the track Saturday evening. Hendricks picked up where he left off by advancing from third to second place to earn a transfer into the main event.
“We were too tight in the feature,” he said. “I was too tight on the bottom and too loose on the top. We just didn’t handle very well. We came back in and had a short break while they worked the track and we worked on our car for Sunday’s show.”
Hendricks, who placed 15th in the first feature, opened the finale by finishing second in a heat race. That relegated him to the B Main, which he won to start the main event on the outside of the eighth row.
“I felt a lot better,” he said. “We kept pretty much everything the same and the car handled really good. The track took a tiny bit of rubber toward the end, which made me get a little tight. I jumped the cushion a couple of times, but it was definitely a good feature for us.”
Hendricks charged to an eighth-place finish, which marked his third top 10 this season.
The team is scheduled to get a micro sprint engine back on Wednesday and if everything works out Hendricks will compete this week in the final three Sooner 600 Week races – Thursday at Creek County Speedway in Sapulpa, Okla.; Friday at Red Dirt Raceway in Meeker, Okla.; and Saturday at I-44 Riverside Speedway in Oklahoma City, Okla. – with the Driven Midwest USAC NOW600 National Micro Series presented by MyRacePass.
“I haven’t raced a micro much since I got the midget,” he said. “Going back they are easier to drive and handle a lot better. We’re running this to have some fun. It’s a new car with a new motor so hopefully things go well.”
Hendricks placed fifth during his lone micro sprint race this season.
