Giovanni Scelzi Wins Third Straight Micro Sprint Feature and Records Third Career Podium in Sprint Car

Inside Line Promotions – ANTIOCH, Calif. (June 27, 2016) – Giovanni Scelzi scored his third straight victory in his family owned micro sprint last Friday to open a weekend doubleheader that was capped with a podium finish in a 360ci winged sprint car.

“It was a great weekend for our team,” he said. “We’re on top of the world.”

The action began on Friday at Plaza Park Raceway in Visalia, Calif., where Scelzi set quick time during qualifying at the micro sprint event. He then advanced from fourth to third place in a heat race to lock into the feature inversion, which was a six to line him up on the outside of the third row for the main event.

“We got to fourth right off the bat,” he said. “I got into third with about five or six laps down. I slid Jake Hagopian for second and then I got the lead around halfway through the race. Me and Jake slid each for several laps before I got out in front of him and we led the last 10 laps or so.”

The victory gives Scelzi two wins at Plaza Park Raceway this season.

The team shifted gears and headed to Antioch Speedway on Saturday for a sprint car event. Scelzi finished where he started – third – in a heat race and he lined up on the inside of the third row for the main event.

“I got to second in probably two laps,” he said. “The track was one lane around the bottom. I got under the leader one time and just couldn’t do anything. We ran second for most of the race until there was two or three laps to go when a guy got around me and then the leader. We still had a top-three finish so it was a good night.”

Scelzi’s third-place result gives him three podiums in six career sprint car races.

He is slated to return to micro sprint competition this Friday and Saturday at Plaza Park Raceway for the Budweiser Outlaw Nationals.
