This past Saturday at Auto City Speedway proved racing is still alive and well when it comes to local short track racing. The night was perfect for racing, not too hot and not too cold for the scheduled “Miller 100”. The pits were filled with the JEGS/CRA All Star Series cars, MCR (Midwest Classic Racers) Dwarf Cars, plus the Herald Pure Stocks.
Qualifying started with the Pure Stocks and Adam Rowe (a past Street Stock Champion at Auto City) driving Nate Rowe’s car #68 was just a tick off the track record, setting fast time of a 16.16. It was only the second time the #68 has visited Auto City this year with Nate driving the first time on opening night.
The MCR Dwarf cars qualified and it was point’s leader Kim Hughes in her brightly colored blue and pink #6 getting fast time of the night.
Then the nineteen JEGS/CRA cars hit the track for qualifying and when all were complete, it was point’s leader, Eric Hovevar’s red #14 getting fast time. There was some local notables entered in the evenings event as, Travis Eddy, Mike Clancy Jr., Jay Sommers, Eric Lee, Kyle Hayden just to name a few.
The nights racing started out with the Herald Pure Stocks heat races and there was no disappointment of how the nights racing was going to be. From the drop of the green flag, Bree Norfleet in her teal and white #1 made it three wide and darted through to the top spot going into turns one and two and leading down the backstretch. She held that spot for the whole eight laps and took the first checkered flag of the night.
The second heat race was a shakedown of what would be in store for the later feature race, but when it was all over, Chad Lamson in his #888 took the win over Randy Clayton Jr.’s #54.
The MCR’s heat races were next up and with these miniaturized throwback replicas of old modifieds (Dwarf Cars are 5/8 scale models of vintage cars from 1928 to 1948, they have full steel roll cages, sheet metal bodies, and are powered by 4 cylinder motorcycle engines between 750cc and 1250cc). They showed how they can pack a punch as it was Logan Mears in the #32 taking the first heat race and the #97x of Eric Hoffman winning the second.
The always fun and family friendly Kiddy Stocks (kids from the audience signing up to pedal a big wheel) took to the front stretch for their two laps and it was Josh from Huron, MI. taking the win.
So after that, the JEGS/CRA All Stars lined up on the front stretch for their ‘meet and greet’ with the fans. Many fans strolled out to meet the drivers and get an autograph. The pre-setting was perfect for the upcoming Miller 100 as once the fans got back into the grandstands, drivers introductions commenced and it was time for the 100 lapper. The racing was pretty fast with no major incidents as all were shuffling for position. Local Clio based driver and veteran to Auto City Speedway, Kyle Hayden in his white and blue #14 had made his way to the top spot and he was who everyone was chasing. As the laps counted down and even with a few restarts, Kyle was the man to beat. The other #14 of Carson Hocevar was doing everything he could to get around Kyle, but toward the latter laps, ended up spinning out and had to go to the back of the pack. Maybe the track remembered Kyle and made sure all was good, because when the Sunoco checkered flags flew, it was Kyle taking the win over the #7 of Wes Griffith Jr.
The Herald Pure Stock 25 lap feature was next on the schedule and talk about all 16 drivers wanting to take the win on this full moon night, it was by no means a letdown. With the drop of the green, coming out of turn two, Josh Delong #067 and James JT Clayton #55 made contact and causing James to get a flat. That set it up for a complete restart. Once they were back to racing, everyone was vying for position even battling three to four wide at times. When it got down to the last laps, it was James Clayton, Josh Delong, Randy Clayton Jr., Chad Lamson and Adam Rowe all battling up front. Then on lap 24, the yellow came out to create a one lap shootout for the win. Once the green/white flew again, it was a fierce battle for the lead, but coming across the finish line almost 3 wide, it was Josh Delong taking the win and Chad Lamson just nosing out James Clayton for second.
The MCR Dwarf Cars were now on the track for their feature and with some stout buzzing around on the ¼ mile, it was the point’s leader and fast time of the night, Kim Hughes battling her way up to the front on the last couple laps past Troy Hoffman in his #97 and taking the win.
The Auto City Figure 8’s were the last race of the night and with Chad Lamson starting at the rear. You wondered if Chad in his silver bullet would be able to get another win. Well it did not take long for the Figure 8 multi-time champion to get to the front and do exactly that, claim another win.
With the full moon glowing, the fans shuffling out and the dust settling, it was a “good night of racing” in all divisions.
