Chris Hile Rides The High-Side To Brewerton Speedway Modified Victory Lane

BREWERTON, NY – Friday night at the Brewerton Speedway Chris Hile from Oswego, NY became only the second driver this season to win more than one feature in the Tracey Road Equipment DIRTcar Modifieds.

In the 35-lap feature on a hammer down, fast multi-groove race track surface, Hile was one of the fastest cars riding the top of the speedway.

On lap 18 Hile moved into second and set his sights on leader Tom Sears Jr...  Sears had an almost 3 second lead and would there be enough time for Hile to track down Sears and challenge for the win.

The yellow would wave on lap 27, erasing Sears' lead and would tighten the field up for an eight-lap battle royal to the finish.

When the green came back out Chris Hile went back to the top groove of the track and would drive by Tom Sears Jr. on lap 30. Once out front there was no stopping Hile behind the wheel of his Lightning Management, 1911 Hard Cider, No. 5 H, Bicknell from grabbing his second win of the year. Tom Sears Jr., Billy Decker, Larry Wight and Tim Sears Jr. finished second through fifth.

The Modified competition has been so stout at the speedway in 2019 only Chris Hile and Tom Sears Jr. have more than one feature win at two each.

Other winners on Mirabito and Blackburn Truck Bodies night were, Rich Townsend & Kevin Root (DOT Foods DIRTcar Sportsman) Mike Mullen & Casey Sykes (U.S Air Force Mod Lites) Chris Bonoffski & Ray Bechler (Fleet Repairs Truck & Trailer repair 4-Cylinders) Chuck Powelczyk is the 2019 4-Cylinder Track Champion.

Tim Harris and Katelyn Hile would lead the 35-lap Modified feature down to the green with Hile grabbing the early advantage.

With 10 laps showing on the scoring tower, Hile still showed the way out front with Roy Bresnahan in her tire tracks with Chad Phelps, Tom Sears Jr., and Harris in a close battle for third through fifth.

The yellow would wave on lap 11 when Bresnahan suddenly slowed on the front straight. On the restart Sears would blast into the lead.

Sears would open a full straightaway lead by lap 15 leaving Phelps, Chris Hile, Katelyn Hile and Andrew Ferguson to race for second through fifth.

On lap 20 Sears would hold a 2.5 seconds lead over Chris Hile with Phelps, Larry Wight who started 14th and Billy Decker 13th showing in the top-five.

The yellow would wave on lap 27, erasing Tom Sears' big lead, putting Hile, Wight, Decker and Phelps right there for an eight-lap shootout to the checkers.

After the restart Chris Hile, who was on rails running on the topside of the speedway, would blast by Sears with 5 laps to go exiting turn-four and was never headed the rest of the way. Tom Sears Jr., Billy Decker, Larry Wight and Tim Sears Jr. would finish second through fifth.

In the 25-lap August 16 Sportsman holdover feature Rich Townsend would lead the opening 3 laps when Willy Decker Jr. drove into the lead.

With 10 laps showing on the scoring tower, Decker and Townsend were in a two-car breakaway race for the lead with Brandon Carvey, Corey Barker and JJ Courcy showing in the top-five.

Townsend would retake the lead with 10 laps to go by a narrow margin over Decker at the flag stand with Carvey, Courcy and Barker still in contention at the front of the field.

Over the final laps, Willy Decker Jr. threw everything he had at Rich Townsend but Townsend would take the win by a narrow 0.411 of a second at the finish. Brandon Carvey, JJ Courcy and Alan Fink finished third through fifth.

In the second 25-lap Sportsman feature Bob Henry Jr. would take the lead at the start setting a quick pace out front.

On lap 5 Henry and Mike Fowler were in a two-car breakaway race for the lead with Amy Holland, Colby Herzog and Stephen Denton showing in the top-five on the scoring tower.

Henry and Fowler still ran first and second on lap 10 but now had company as Holland ran down the top-two, making it a three-car battle up front. Herzog ran fourth with Kevin Root who started 15th in fifth.

With 10 laps remaining, Henry held a slim two-car length lead as you could have thrown a blanket over Holland, Fowler, Root and Mark Yorker as the final laps started clicking off the lap counter.

The red flag would stop the field on lap 16 when six cars had a wreck at the entrance of turn one with John Strickler rolling over. All drivers were okay.

When the race went back green, division point leader Kevin Root would move into second on lap 18 and then would drive into the lead on lap 20 and would outrun Chris Mackey to the checkers. Bob Henry Jr., Amy Holland and Matt Janczuk finished third through fifth.

In the 20-lap August 16 holdover feature for Mod Lites, Justin Williams would lead the opening 2 laps before Zack Babcock took advantage of the quick outside groove to drive by Williams on lap 3 to be scored the new leader.

At the halfway point Babcock led by around five car lengths with Williams, Mike Mullen, Casey Sykes and Clayton Brewer III running under a blanket for second through fifth.

After working his way into second, Mullen and Babcock put on a battle royal for the win, running side-by-side, that came down to the checkers and would see Mullen win by 0.080 of a second at the finish. Casey Sykes, Clayton Brewer III and Justin Williams completed the top-five.

In the second 20-lap Mod Lite Feature Joe Garafolo would lead lap 1 before the red came out after Brian Meyers took a nasty tumble on the front straightaway. Meyers was okay.

After another quick yellow a restart would see Mike Mullen take over the lead.

The fastest car on the track was Casey Sykes. On lap 6 he went from fourth to second and then one lap later he would be scored the new leader.

Once out front, points leader Sykes would be the class of the field going on to his fifth win of the year. Joe Garafolo, Mike Mullen, Zack Babcock and Doug Williams finished second through fifth.

It was track championship night for 4-Cylinders and would come down to two 15-lap features to decide it. Coming into the night multi-time track champion Chuck Powelczyk held a 4-point lead over Chris Bonoffski.

In the first feature Bonoffski and Quinn Wallis would have a side-by-side battle with each leading laps until halfway when Bonoffski retook the lead and would never look back, cruising under the checkers and would carry a 4 point lead to decide the title in the second feature. Ray Bechler, Chuck Powelczyk, Tim Balins and Clayton Koch finished second through fifth.

In the second feature Chris Bonoffski held a slim 4-point lead over Powelczyk for the Championship.

In the second feature Ray Bechler would win his first of the year. Chuck Powelczyk, Nate Powers, Ken Pitsley, Joseph Staring and Chris Bonoffski chased Bechler across the line.

With his second-place finish Chuck Powelczyk was crowned the Fleet Repairs Truck & Trailer Repair 4-Cylinder Track Champion. It was his 9th championship with the same car.
