Jimmy Phelps Best of Tracey Road DIRTcar Modifieds on Thompson & Johnson Equipment Night.

By Hannah Doll

BREWERTON, NY (June 16, 2024)- Under a picture-perfect setting, Brewerton Speedway came to life Friday, June 15, as both fans and teams flocked into the gates for a memorable night of tight racing and autographs presented by Thompson & Johnson Equipment. The night's lineup included five feature events showcasing the Tracey Road DIRTcar Modifieds, DOT Foods DIRTcar Sportsman, AmeriCU IMCA Modlites, and Mirabito DIRTcar 4-Cylinders.

Winners from Thompson & Johnson Equipment night included Jimmy Phelps (Tracey Road DIRTcar Modifieds), Zach Sobotka and Joe Trichilo (DOT Foods DIRTcar Sportsman), Mike Mullen (AmeriCU IMCA STARS Mod Lites), and Chris Bonoffski (Mirabito DIRTcar 4-Cylinders)

When the green flag dropped on the headline 35-lap Tracey Road DIRTcar Modified feature, James Witko Jr. and Max Hill shot out of the Comfort Windows Firing point with a two-car drag race for the early race lead. Hill would grab the early advantage until lap three as the first Milton Cat Caution would fly for a car slow on the backstretch.

Once again, Hill and Witko Jr. would lead the field to green, with Hill grabbing the lead once more. However, Jeff Taylor was on a charge from his sixth starting position, using the high side to get ahead of Witko Jr. for second. With Hill continuing his charge ahead of the field, a mid-race caution on lap 18 would quickly squash his advantage.

When the race resumed, Hill once again took the lead, with Matt Meade charging around Taylor for second and narrowing in on Hill. A with 13-laps remaining caution would set the stage for what would be a thrill ending.

Meade and Hill would lead the field back to the green flag but would quickly come back around to yellow as Hill's fantastic run ended with a spin in turn 1. Hill's misfortune moved Taylor up to second in his first night out with a freshened Big Block powerplant.

Meade jumped back to the lead on the restart in his 358-modified powered car, but it would be short-lived as Big Block power seemed to take over late in the race.

Taylor used his extra power to power around Meade for the lead on lap 26 with a high-side pass off of turn-4. Multi-time track champion, Phelps, would follow suit and gave chase to Taylor. Phelps would stalk Taylor's The Wild Animal Park #11T, with Taylor banging the cushion with Phelps searching for a lane to get by. Finally on lap-32 Phelps found a groove to his liking and powered his J & B Installations past Taylor to take the lead.

Once out-front Phelps wouldn't look back and went on to claim his second win of 2024. Still looking for his first career Modified win,Taylor would be forced to settle for second, Impressive rookie, Chris Hulsizer, charged from a 12th place starting spot to take the final podium position. Larry Wight and Chad Phelps rounded out the top 5.

Zach Sobotka picked up his third Dot Foods DIRTcar Sportsman win of the season in the regularly scheduled feature event. Charging from his 15th starting spot, Sobotka got the better of a spirited battle for the lead with a strong-running Tony Finch II on lap 22 and went on to take the checkered. Finch completed a solid night with a runner-up finish. Brewerton newcomer, Nick Ventura, had his best career Brewerton run with a third-place finish with Austin Germinio and Kyle Devendorf rounding out the top 5.

In a rain-out makeup race from May 17, first-year Brewerton regular Joe Trichilo picked up his first career Sportsman win. Fifth starting Trichilo, from North Syracuse, put himself into contention early and worked his way into the runner-up spot on lap 10. It took Trichilo seven more laps to catch and pass Germinio for the race lead on lap 17.

Once out-front Trichilo was gone, driving away to take the checkered by almost a 4-second gap. Germinio would finish a solid second with Nicholas Root crossing the line in third. Sobotka backed up his main feature win a fourth-place finish with Finch II would cross the line in fifth after starting all the way back in 25th.

Mike Mullen would pick up the AmeriCU IMCA STARS Mod Lite feature, outlasting Zack Babcock for the win. Joe Isabell would cross in third, with Joseph Garafolo and Justin Williams rounding out the top 5.

Chris Bonoffski would take the Mirabito 4-Cylinder win, holding off second and third-place finishers Justin Guyle and Anthony VanEpps. Walt VanEpps and Clayton Koch would complete the top 5.
