Phelps Claims Victory After Hulsizer Heartbreak

By Hannah Doll

BREWERTON, NY (July 28, 2024) - Second generation Tracey Road DIRTcar Big Block Modified rookie, Chris Hulsizer, appeared headed for his second win of the season Friday night at Brewerton Speedway. Instead, it was multi-time track champion and current point leader Jimmy Phelps in victory lane for the third time in 2024 after mechanical woes stopped Hulsizer's effort short.

Other feature winners on Jammers Sports Bar & Restaurant night included Gordon Smith (Dot Foods DIRTcar Sportsman), Chris Bonoffski (Mirabito DIRTcar 4-Cylinder Super Stocks), Joe Isabell (AmeriCU Mod Lites), and Justin LaDue (Hustling The Highway 600cc Modifieds).

Tim Harris and Tom Sears Jr paced the Tracey Road Modified field to the Comfort Windows firing point, bringing the field to green for the 35-lap feature event.

Harris grabbed the early race lead, with fourth starter Jeff Taylor getting around Sears Jr for second. Taylor would reel Harris in quickly and use the high side to clear Harris for the lead on lap 3.

As Taylor drove out to a lengthy lead, fifth starter Chris Hulsizer charged his way to the front, taking second away from Harris on lap 6. Hulsizer started reeling in Taylor when the first Milton Cat Caution would fly for Chris Hile spun in turns 1 and 2.

The field would regroup with Taylor and Hulsizer leading the field. Taylor would continue to lead on the restart with Hulsizer in pursuit. Meanwhile, thirteenth starter Jimmy Phelps and fifteenth starter Tim Sears Jr were charging to the front in virtual lockstep. They each reached the top five on lap 15 before a Milton CAT Caution on lap 19 slowed the pace once again.

The strong running Hulsizer used a strong outside charge on the restart to take over the top spot from Taylor. Sears and Phelps followed Hulsizer past Taylor's #11T one lap later. It would be these-three left to settle it over the final 15 laps.

With Hulsizer out front, Sears and Phelps would wage a spirited battle side-by-side for the runner-up spot. Swapping lanes and trying different lines, the two high-point frontrunners would battle each other while trying to keep the strong running Hulsizer within earshot. A Milton CAT Caution would slow the field one final time on lap 29, setting up a single file restart with six laps to go.

With two of Brewerton's all-time best behind him, Hulsizer would be unfazed on the restart. He would once again drive away with the lead with Phelps trying to keep pace. Just when he appeared headed for his second career Modified win it was heartbreak for Hulsizer when he slowed with a broken right rear suspension with just two laps to go.

Phelps inherited the lead and would stay in front of Sears to the checkered flag. Following Phelps and Sears, second year chauffeur Amy Holland made a late charge to finish third. Ronnie Davis III crossed in fourth with Taylor finishing a solid fifth.

Gordon Smith made the trip from his Oxford, NY home fruitful claiming his first career Brewerton Speedway feature win in DOT Foods DIRTcar Sportsman action. Usually an Afton Speedway regular, the second-generation driver came from the 11th starting spot to claim the win. Tony Finch II completed yet another top-3 run by finishing second with 15th place starter Cody Manitta claiming third. Nicholas Root followed in fourth with early leader Ryan Barrett rounded out the top 5 with a solid run.

Chris Bonoffki delivered another dominating run, picking up his third Mirabito DIRTcar 4-Cylinder Super Stock win of the season over second-place Anthony VanEpps. Maggie Guyle followed in third, with Walt VanEpps and Clayton Koch completing the top 5.

Joe Isabell grabbed the AmeriCU IMCA STARS Mod Lite feature event in a brand-new car. Zack Babcock would settle for second, with Mike Mullen crossing in third. Joseph Garafolo and Kyle Demo rounded out the top 5.

In their third start of 2024, Justin LaDue clinched the 25-lap Hustling the Highway 600cc Modified Series feature event. Charles Lohmeyer, Doug Windhausen, Ali Scutt, and TJ Smith grab the final top 5 positions.
