Pavlicek collects first Buffalo River Race Park win of 2018

GLYNDON, Minn. – A big night of racing was on tap at Buffalo River Race Park Sunday evening. With the previous week’s features being washed out due to rain, the track had double features in all classes scheduled. Unfortunately, more rain washed out the make-up features just as the regular night’s action was completed. A date for the make-up feature is still to be determined.

Buffalo River Race Park will be racing next Saturday evening, featuring $5 admission with a Fan Appreciation Night ticket.

Rich Pavlicek of Casselton picked up his first win of the season in the IMCA Modifieds. Pavlicek chased pole sitter, Patrick Brejcha, through the first half of the race. The bottom lane was the preferred groove for the majority of top 10 runners. With 10 laps to go, Pavlicek placed a successful bid for the lead in turn four as he snuck underneath Brejcha.

Bryce Borgen followed Pavlicek into second. A pair of cautions with nine to go played into the hands of 10th place starter, Marcus Tomlinson. Tomlinson, who made the 250 mile haul from Turtle Lake, N.D. moved into the third position before getting by Borgen for second.

Pavlicek went on to score the win comfortably over Tomlinson as Borgen held on to round out the podium.

The second annual Mid-Summer IMCA Hobby Stock Shootout made its way to Buffalo River Race Park. The four-race swing for the hobby stocks took them to tracks across the region and featured an increased payout at each event and a points championship, which was determined on Sunday night.

Tim Gonska led the opening circuit of the 20-lap main event, which boasted a season high 20 hobby stocks. Gonska stayed in front of Brock Beeter and Adam Goff until a restart on lap six. Entering turn one, the leaders went three wide as Beeter took the lead down the back straightaway.

However, the driver on the move was Malik Sampson. The Worthington, Minn. driver had to restart at the tail of the field after causing a caution on lap five. Sampson drove through the field to become a contender in the closing stages. Sampson grabbed the second spot with five laps to go and set his sights on Beeter for the lead. Sampson ran out of time as Beeter took the win.

Sampson was awarded the points title for the Mid-Summer Hobby Stock Shootout.

Davenport, North Dakota’s Dan Dowling claimed his second Buffalo River Race Park win of the season. Dowling withstood pressure from Vince Jegtvig on five different restarts en route to the win. One of those cautions included a seven-car pile up in turn one. Most cars involved only received minor damage and were able to rejoin the field.

Dowling took the checkers by a comfortable two-and-a-half seconds over Jegtvig.

Tim Estenson raced to his 17th INEX legends win of the season. It took just eight laps for the Fargo driver to go from the ninth starting spot to the lead. Estenson held off Tye Wilke on a pair of restarts with under five to go to claim his seventh Buffalo River Race Park win of 2018. Kaitlyn Skalicky led the opening circuits of the 20-lap feature after starting in fourth. Skalicky ran second behind Estenson at the halfway point until she clipped an infield tire barrier in turn two, which spun her around and brought out the caution.

Minutes after claiming the legends win, Tim Estenson climbed aboard his NLSA lightning sprint and nearly won his second feature of the night. Estenson, who is a rookie with the lightning sprints, held a commanding lead until he reached lapped traffic. Josh Abrahamson reeled in Estenson and made a bold move for the lead in turn four.

Estenson battled back to challenge Abrahamson, but made contact with Abrahamson’s No. 16. Abrahamson spun to a stop in turn two, which triggered a caution that went on Estenson. Estenson restarted at the tail of the field as Abrahamson cruised to his second win of the season.

In what was one of the best finishes of the year at Buffalo River Race Park, Tanner Engen of Detroit Lakes, Minn. scored the sport compact feature win. Engen, who started eighth, reeled in leader Matt Pederson on the last lap. Engen drove to the inside of Pederson in the final set of corners and stole the win in a drag race to the checkers for his second win of the season.

Joe Lewis picked up his sixth slingshot feature win of the season. The division designed for young kids had its highest car count of the season.
