O'Brien Halts Dunn's Win Streak At Can-Am

LAFARGEVILLE, NY - The threat of rain loomed large over the evening’s racing, as many of the tracks in Northern New York were closed due to weather. It was a bounty night on driver Billy Dunn in the 358-Modified feature. The rules were straightforward: Billy Dunn had to start last in the feature, and he had to finish, in order for the extra cash bounty to be paid out. The top three finishers could earn bonus money should they all beat out Dunn on the night. Should Dunn win the feature, he would get the full bounty.

Winners on the night included: 1x Mike White in the Pro Street Stocks, 26M Phil Desormeau III in Thunder Cars, 24 Jordan Kelly in Novice Sportsman, 44 David Rogers in Sportman Mods (pending tech), and 17D Danny O’Brien in 358 Small Block Modifieds, claiming the bonus bounty for besting Billy Dunn.

HEAT RACES
The first of the heat races for the evening was the Novice Sportsman Modifieds. 30 Hunter Schwander and 00 Billy Matteson started in the top two positions. Schwander shot out ahead as the green flag waved. 99R Anthony Rasmussen, starting in eleventh, immediately fired up to second place. The field was stretched around the entire track at the checkered, where 30 Hunter Schwander took first, 99r Rasmussen took second and 24 Jordan Kelly finished third.

Next up were the 358 Small Block Modifieds for one of two heat races. 1 Craig Collier and 51 Brady Gill started in first and second positions. Gill shot out to the lead immediately, while 10 VanBrocklin catapulted up from fifth to second by the end of lap one. 16 Lance Willix II moved up from sixth position to third, but was immediately challenged by 17D Danny O’Brien for the position. By lap four, VanBrocklin challenged for the lead, but got loose through turn two and fell back in the pack. O’Brien continued his charge in lap four, passing Willix and gaining on Gill. On the final lap, O’Brien attempted a pass low for the lead, but Gill was too fast. At the checkered flag it was 51 Brady Gill, 17D Danny O’Brien and 16 Lance Willix II in the top three positions.
The second heat for 358s had 39 Tyler Bartlett and 93 Ryan Bartlett in the top two positions. At the drop of the green flag, Ryan Bartlett took the lead, while 9 Billy Dunn launched from sixth to third, by the back stretch of lap one. Half way through the heat, it was 93 Bartlett, 39 Bartlett and 9 Dunn in the top three positions. That was how it would stay at the checkered flag.

Though Burns grabbed the lead early, it was 17n Justin Nier who moved into first by lap two, with 32 Chuck Monica in second, while White settled into third. 16 Matt Marcinko moved up from seventh starting position to fourth, challenging White for the third position by the final lap. At the checkered flag it was 17n Nier by a front bumper, 32 Monica in second and 16 Marcinko rounding out the top three.
Sportsman Modified was a packed class, with four heat races. 57 Anthony Stockman and 91 Josh Reome started in the top two positions. At the checkered flag it was 91 Reome, 57 Stockman and 25 Sanford in the top three positions.
The second heat for Sportsman Mods had 81 Tyler Reynolds and 44 Dave Rogers in the top two starting positions. Rogers was shot out of a cannon at the drop of the green flag, taking sole possession of the lead with nary a contender. 21 Taylor Caprara moved up from sixth position to third, by lap two, challenging Reynolds for second. Caprara would dive low, while Reynolds stayed high, the left front wheel lifting from the track surface as he powered out of the corners to keep his position. On the final lap, Caprara tried once again to pass, but Reynolds was able to keep him at bay. At the checkered flag it was 44 Rogers, 81 Reynolds and 21 Caprara in the top three positions.
Heat number three rolled out next, with Fox28 Jeff Stevenson and 24 Jordan Kelly started in first and second positions. 17 Tristan Draper moved up from fourth to second on lap one, while Fox28 Stevenson moved out ahead of the pack by several car lengths. 21H Andy Howard improved from sixth starting position to third position by lap three. At the checkered flag it was 19 Scott, 272 Shanahan by barely a front bumper and 3k Shawn Kirby in the top three positions.

At the restart it was 24 Kelly, 1 Davidson, 34 Nier, 30 Schwander and 99R Rasmussen in the top five positions. Once again Kelly shot to the front, while Schwander was the hard charger, moving up to second position for a time, but giving way to Davidson and falling back into third. With just two laps remaining, another caution came out. Another caution in lap six set the field for another restart. 9 Billy Dunn had climbed up to ninth position, while the Bartletts remained in first and second. At the checkered flag, it was 17D O’Brien, 25 Herrington, 9 Dunn, 39 Tyler Bartlett and 24 Pat Dupree in the top five positions. The top two bounties paid out, while Dunn managed third place during a rain-influenced feature.

Next up were the Thunder Cars, with 94 OJ White and 11J Justin Burns in the top two starting positions. 32 Chuck Monica and 17N Justin Nier were in the second row. The race got underway just as the skies opened up, making treacherous turn-two even more so. The race was suspended due to conditions, while the track groomers were brought out to try to keep the track in racing shape. After a delay of twenty minutes or so, racing resumed, with a full race restart. 11J Justin Burns jumped out to the lead, while 17N Nier challenged almost immediately for first. 26M Phil Desormeau III moved up quickly from fifth to second, side by side with Nier as they moved past the leader. By lap four, it was 26M Desormeau in the lead, with 17N Nier in second when a caution slowed racing once again. 32 Chuck Monica was in third hot on the heels of 17N Nier on the restart, while 26M Desormeau climbed away from the field. 11J Justin Burns was in fourth by lap five, with 6D Kurtis Daye moving up from eighth starting position to fifth. Row number two had Fox28 Jeff Stevenson and 35 Thomas Cook in third and fourth positions to start. At the green it was 44 Rogers who shot out ahead, while the cars went three wide behind him. Reome continued in second place with Cook in third, when a caution brought the field back together again for a restart. Once again Rogers pulled out into the lead. 271 Tiger Chapman Jr. moved up from eighth to third by lap three, closing on second position. As the field stretched out, it was 44 Rogers, 91 Reome, 271 Chapman, 35 Cook and 57 Stockman in the top five positions. By lap six, Stockman moved up to fourth position. By lap ten, Rogers was catching up to the tail of the field. A lap later a caution flag flew, closing up all of the gaps that had developed through eleven laps of racing. 24 Jordan Kelly went off the back berm and spun out, bringing out another caution one lap later. Rogers continued his dominance off the green, grabbing ahold of the lead once again. Meanwhile, 21 Taylor Caprara moved into fifth position after starting tenth. By lap fourteen 91 Reome recaptured the lead from 44 Rogers. The battle for fourth heated up by lap seventeen, as 21 Caprara and 57 Stockman traded positions multiple times around the track. Rogers poured it on again on the restart, nosing past Reome for the lead just as several cars got together in turn four. 12 Troy Fleming and 621 Brian Hudson were able to continue racing after the wreck, but 24 Jordan Kelly, 21H Andy Howard and 17 Tristan Draper were not so lucky. Each had to hitch a ride to the pits. During the caution, several cars headed to the pits, including the race leader, 91 Josh Reome.
