Dunn Dazzles & Fireball Poirier Lights It Up At Caprara's Can-Am Motorsports Park

After cancelling Friday night’s events due to rain, Caprara’s Can-Am Motorsports Park was racing with a big show on Saturday night. Empire Super Sprints, Super DIRTCar 358 Modifieds and GRIT Sportsman Modifieds rolled onto the Nasty Track of the North, under cloudy, but not rainy skies.

Steve “Fireball� Poirier made a move on Matt Tanner and Jeff Cook with only a handful of laps remaining to take home the victory in the Empire Super Sprints’ twenty-five lap feature. As Tanner and Cook got caught up with slower lapped traffic, Poirier leap-frogged around the leaders, from third position, to capture first place and the victory.

“I saw the lapped cars, and I thought, maybe we can try it on the outside,� Poirier said, from victory lane. “They were so jammed up and I had just enough bite on the outside that we made it through. I was happy we made it through that. We either do really good here at Can-Am or we are struggling really bad. Tonight, we did good.�

“I wasn’t sure if I should go high or stay at the bottom there,� Tanner said, in reference to the late-lap pass by Poirier. “I couldn’t really see if there was room around from where I was at, but I guess he could see better back in third, and he made the jump and it worked for him.�

Billy Dunn was top man in the seventy-five lap DIRTcar 358 Modified feature. Dunn started third, but drove his way into the lead in lap twenty-six and led the remaining forty-nine laps.
Dunn bested a hard-charging Chad Brachmann who improved from a twenty-second position start to take second place.

“I had to see what the first five to ten laps brought us,� Dunn said, from victory lane. “Every time a caution came out, I just had to take a deep breath, hit my marks and stay out ahead.�

It capped a very successful season for Dunn at Caprara’s Can-Am Motorsports Park, as he finished the year with multiple victories and a track championship.

Zach Sabotka edged out Kevin Root for the GRIT Sportsman Modified victory.

“Me and Kevin were battling the whole way,� Sabotka said from victory lane. “But I guess I got a good jump on the restart there, and got it.�

“Congrats to Zach Sabotka,� Root said, after parking his number 34 in front of the grandstands for post-race photos. “He ran a great race. He didn’t wreck. He pulled up out there once on me, I did the same for him. It was a good race. He’s a great young man.�

Mike White won the feature in the Pro Street Stock class.

Racing for the 2017 season at Caprara’s Can-Am Motorsports Park has concluded for the year.

HEAT RACES:
GRIT Sportsman:
The first heat race of the night had 57 Anthony Stockman and 38j started in first and second place. 25 George Sanford shot out ahead for the lead through turns one and two, but Stockman regained position as they passed the flag stand. Stockman proceed to put distance well ahead of the rest of the field, while Sanford settled into second by lap four. 22 Josh Verne moved up on Sanford a lap later and took over second place. After a lap seven caution, Stockman launched back ahead of the field on the restart and won the drag race to the checkered flag. 22 Josh Verne took second place and 25 George Sanford finished third.

The second heat race had 1 Jack Meeks and 34 Kevin Root in the top two starting positions. Meeks took the lead early, with Root in second. But a lap three caution gave Root a chance for the lead position, and he didn’t let it slip by. Root shot into first place through turns one and two and didn’t relent, putting ten car lengths between himself and Meeks by lap six. 1 Jimmy Spano settled into third. With just one lap left, 20k Kyle Inman moved into third, leaving Spano in fourth. At the checkered flag, it was 34 Kevin Root with the win, 1 Jack Meeks in second, and 20k Kyle Inman in third.

In the third heat race, 2 Chris Thurston and 38 Zach Sabotka started in the top two positions. Sabotka slid through turns one and two, slipping into the lead. 24k Nick Krause settled into third, while 44 David Rogers challenged for the position by lap three. It took another half a lap for Rogers to take over third, leaving Krause in fourth. Sabotka took the low line around the track through laps four and five, while Thurston found speed on the high side. Thurston was able to complete the pass for the lead in lap six, just as a caution flag flew over the track, bringing the racers back together for a restart. On the restart, Thurston opted for the high side on the restart, and it cost him, as Sabotka found speed once again on the low line. 44 Rogers followed him, taking over second position, relegating Thurston to third. 24k Krause went high through turn two, and got caught up on the berm, costing a few positions. 71 Legrow got caught up in lap seven, crumpling his right front wheel and eliciting the caution. It was a one lap drag race to the checkered flag, with 38 Zach Sabotka winning, 2 Chris Thurston taking second, 24k Nick Krause took third.

The fourth heat had 45r Preston Forbes and 1x Willy Decker Jr. in the top two starting positions. Forbes took the lead through lap one, with 415 Andrew Wren moving up into second. 1x Willy Decker Jr. settled into third, while 26 Mike Mandigo pulled into fourth by lap four. By lap five, the field was stretched out around the track, with the only side-by-side racing occurring at the tail. At the finish line, it was 45R Preston Forbes with the win, 415 Andrew Wren in second and 1x Willy Decker Jr. in third.

 

EMPIRE SUPER SPRINTS:
The first heat race for the Empire Super Sprints had 11j Chris Jones and 10c Paulie Colagiovanni starting in the top two positions. Jones caught the lead out of turns one and two, but Colagiovanni made him work for it through lap two, challenging and then relenting, and eventually settling into second position through lap three. 88 Alain Bergeron moved into third, and was steadily gaining on the leaders by lap four. By lap five, Bergeron wrested second position away from Colagiovanni, and started to close in on the leader, Jones. 19k Paul Kinney, not content in fourth position, started to challenge for third position. Bergeron took the lead in lap eight, driving away from the field quickly, while Kinney took over third position one lap later, moving Jones into fourth. At the checkered flag, it was 88 Alain Bergeron with the win, 10c Paulie Colagiovanni in second and 19k Paul Kinney in third.

The second heat had 00 Danny Varin and 123 Yan Bilodeau in the top two starting positions. Varin took the lead immediately at the drop of the green, while 36 Matt Billings moved into second position by turn two. 2 Dave Axton settled into third position by lap three. The field stretched around the entire track by lap four. 88C Chad Miller and 123 Yan Bilodeau battled for fourth in lap five. Miller completed the pass a lap later, but had what amounted to miles to catch the third place Axton. With two laps remaining, Varin approached lapped traffic, a full stretch ahead of Billings. At the checkered flag, it was 00 Danny Varin with the win, 36 Matt Billings in second and 2 Dave Axton in third.

The Third heat race for the Empire Super Sprints 90 Matt Tanner and 28FM Steve “Fireball� Poirier started in the top two positions. Fireball Poirer captured the lead by turn two of the first lap, with Tanner settling into second. 10 Jeff Cook held onto third through lap two, while 87 Jason Barney pressured for a pass. But Barney got a little loose in lap three, and this allowed 14 Coleman Gulick to pass him up and capture fourth. Gulick was challenged almost immediately by 53 Shawn Donath. It took two laps for Donath to complete the pass and take over fourth position, while Fireball Poirer was well in the lead, nearly half a track ahead of second position. At the checkered flag, it was 28FM Steve Poirer with the win, 90 Matt Tanner in second and 10 Jeff Cook in third.

 

358 Modifieds:
The 358 Mods took over the track next, for four heat races. In the first heat race, 9 Billy Dunn and 78jr Louis Jackson started in the top two positions. Dunn launched out ahead of the field immediately, while 22d Danny Johnson moved into second by lap two. 31 Lance Willix climbed up into third by lap four, with 27w Nick Webb moving into fourth. At the checkered flag, it was 9 Billy Dunn with the win, 22d Danny Johnson in second and 31 Lance Willix in third.

The next heat had 25 Bobby Harrington and 17D Danny O’brien starting in the top two positions. It was side-by-side racing through three laps, as Harrington and O’Brien duked it out. There was contact in lap three, with Harrington getting the worst of it, sliding up against the wall in turn four. Harrington was able to prevent disaster and plugged back in at fourth place, while O’brien ran away with the lead. 83x Tim Sears moved into second while 62s Tom Sears took over third. And that’s the way it would end at the checkered flag: 17D Danny O’brien with the victory, 83x Tim Sears in second and 62s Tom Sears in third.

The third heat race had 9j Jordan McCreadie and 24 Brandon Sweet starting in the top two positions. At the drop of the green, McCreadie moved into sole owner of the lead, while 66x Cary Terrance moved into third and rubbed Sweet in an attempt to take over third. Sweet was able to fend off the assault at first, but was lost out to Terrance in lap three. By lap four, Terrance was on the back bumper of McCreadie, challenging for the lead. It took two more laps for Terrance to complete the pass, relegating McCreadie to second. At the checkered flag, it was 66x Cary Terrance with the victory, 9j Jordan McCreadie in second and 24 Brandon Sweet in third.

The fourth and final heat race had r70 Ryan Arbuthnot and 23 Joey Ladouceur starting in the top two positions. Arbutnot quickly established himself as the leader by the time the cars exited turn two of the first lap. 22c Mario Claire took over third by lap two, while 23 Joey Ladouceur controlled second . At the checkered flag, it was r70 Ryan Arbuthnot with the win, 23 Joey Ladouceur in second and 22c Mario Claire in third.

PRO STREET STOCKS: Pro Street stocks took the track next, with 1x Mike White and 7x Justin White starting in the top two positions. Mike White owned the lead out of turn one, while Justin White settled into second. 28 Burton Ward moved into third by lap two. Meanwhile, 3 Rick Dusckas was moving through the field, taking over fourth by lap five after starting seventh. At the checkered flag, 1x Mike White cruised to the win, with 7x Justin White in second and 28 Burton Ward in third.

The second heat had 13 Kenny Hamm and 25B Marc Minutolo starting in the top two positions. At the drop of the green, Hamm owned the lead, but 3k Shawn Kirby was right on his back bumper. Kirby sparred with 25 Minutolo through the first two laps, but the bottom line was not the fast lane. Minutolo made it three wide with Kirby and Hamm through lap four, creating the rare Hamm sandwich. Hamm lost his grip in turn one of lap five, going sideways in front of Kirby. For his part, Kirby was able to avoid a catastrophic wreck, but it cost him six positions, as he had to spin the car to prevent t-boning Hamm. After the caution restart, 25B Minutolo owned the lead, with 14R Sid Harmer Jr. in second. By the close of the lap, 3k Shawn Kirby was already in third, just as a caution came out when x15 Tyler Bushey went for a wild 360-degree spin out off the berm of turn one. Bushey was able to rejoin the race, while it was a drag race for one lap for the finish. At the checkered flag, it was 25B Marc Minutolo with the victory by half a car, with 14R Sid Harmer Jr. in second and 3k Shawn Kirby in third.

 

GRIT SPORTSMAN CONSI:
The first of two Consi races had 7s Shaun Shaw and C21 Jeff Davoli starting in the top two positions. Only the top five finishers would make it into the feature. Shaw got out ahead through turns one and two, while Davoli settled into second. 5 Amy Holland completed her pass for second by the close of lap two, while Davoli faded back to third. 88 Chris Bellamy moved up to fourth position by lap five, after starting seventh, while 71x Tim Falter owned fifth place. At the checkered flag, it was 7s Shaun Shaw with the win, 5 Amy Holland in second, C21 Jeff Davoli finished third, 88 Chris Bellamy took fourth, while 71x Tim Falter narrowly captured the fifth and final qualifying position.

In the second Consi race, 99R Dalton Rombough and 18E Justin Gadbaw started in the top two positions. Rombough led the pack off the line, owning the lead through lap one. 21 Taylor Caprara moved up from fifth to third by the close of lap one, steadily gaining on the leaders. In lap four, Gadbaw captured the lead away from Rombough, with Caprara right on his tail. Caprara had a bumper lead on Gadbaw when a caution came out, as 00 Rick McCready encountered issues with his car, loosing power and coming nearly to a stop in turn one. McCready was able to regain power and rejoin the field at the tail as the race restarted. Caprara owned the lead at the drop of the green, while Gadbaw challenged. Gadbaw got loose through turn two, spinning out on the berm. Gadbaw avoided a catastrophic wreck as the field passed below him. He was able to rejoin the race at the tail of the field, as racing restarted. Caprara and Rombough went toe-to-toe on the restart, Caprara low and Rombough high. At the close of lap six, it was Taylor Caprara with the lead. 60 Jackson Gill was in third with just one lap remaining, while 3C Tyler Corcoran was providing pressure to take away the position. Corcoran was unable to perform the pass before a caution came out when 29 Jamie Young spun in turn four. It set the stage for a drag race to the finish line. Caprara owned the lead at the drop of the green, with Rombough in second. Gill managed to retain third. At the checkered flag, it was 21 Taylor Caprara with the win, 99R Dalton Rombough in second, 60 Jackson Gill in third, 3c Tyler Corcoran in third and 88c Xavier Andrews in fifth.

358 MODIFIEDS B-MAIN CONSI: The front row had 151KB Brian McDonald and 39x Alex Terrian starting in the top two positions. McDonald launched into the lead, while 39x Terrian battled with 21 Larry Welling for second. Terrian was able to retain second through lap three, while 28 Tyler Meeks pressured Welling for third position. It took three more laps for Meeks to complete the pass, taking over third, while Welling slid back to fourth. By lap eight, the cars were stretched around half the track, with plenty of real estate separating each position. At the checkered flag, it was 151 Brian McDonald with the win, 39x Alex Terrian took second, while 28 Tyler Meeks took third, 21 Larry Welling took fourth.

The second B-Main Consi race had 01 Chris Raabe and 19 Luke Stewart starting in the top two positions. Raabe owned the lead through lap one, while 39 Ryan Bartlett launched into second. 3B Chad Brachmann and 47s Cory Wheeler battled for third. In lap three Wheeler and Brachmann were battling side-by-side, with Brachmann gaining the advantage. One lap later, Brachmann moved past Bartlett for second place. In lap seven, a caution flag brought the racers back together for a restart. Brachmann rocketed to the lead of the restart, while Bartlett slid back to fourth. At the checkered flag, it was 3 Chad Brachmann with the win. 01 Chris Rabbe took second, 47s Cory Wheeler finished third and 39 Ryan Bartlett took fourth.

FEATURE RACES:

GRIT SPORTSMAN MODIFIED FEATURE: The first feature race of the evening had 25 George Sanford and 38 Zach Sabotka starting in the top two positions. 20k Kyle Inman and 34 Kevin Root were in row two, third and fourth starting positions, respectively. Sanford had the lead through turn one, but a caution came out when 1j Rocky Warner spun out back in the field, in turn one. The original positions were used for the restart, save for Warner who restarted in last place. On the restart, Sabotka had the advantage and the lead as lap one was put in the books. 34 Root was in second, while Sanford slid back to third. Sabotka owned the lead through four laps, but Root was pressuring hard for the lead. It took another lap for Kevin Root to complete the pass and become the new race leader. 1 Jack Meeks moved into fourth by lap six, with 20k Kyle Inman in fifth. An infield u-tire in turn two was clipped in lap eight and rolled onto the racing surface. This triggered a caution and a race restart. Root owned the lead on the restart, with Sabotka hanging on in second, as Meeks angled for a pass. Back in the pack, 21 Taylor Caprara was busy moving through the field, taking over eleventh position by lap ten, after starting in twenty-second. 57 Anthony Stockman was also well improved by lap ten, moving into fourth, after starting back in seventh. 60 Jackson Gill came to a stop in turn four, up against the wall, bringing out another caution in lap fourteen. On the restart, Root retained the lead, while Stockman and Meeks battled it out for third. By lap sixteen, Root was ten car-lengths ahead of second place Sabotka, who, himself had put a similar distance between himself and third place Meeks. In lap twenty, 71x Tim Falter got loose through turn one, ending up pointing the wrong direction at the bottom of the track. This brought out a caution, destroying Root’s sizeable lead, providing an opportunity for more position changes. On the restart, Root retained the lead. 57 Stockman moved past 25 Sanford for fourth position after giving it up the on the restart. Stockman and Meeks did battle next, with Stockman running low and Meeks running high.
The battle for third was paused when 44 David Rogers, who had been moving well through the field, found himself up against the wall of turn four, in lap twenty-five. 60 Jackson Gill was also involved in the wreck with Rogers. With just five laps remaining, it was 34 Root in the lead, with 38 Sabotka in second. 1 Jack Meeks was in third, 57 Anthony Stockman fourth and 25 George Sanford in fifth. On the caution restart, Sabotka got the jump and took over the lead. With just three laps remaining, another caution came out as 71x Falter spun through turn four. Sabotka now had to battle Root on the restart. The scene was set for a three-lap shoot out to the finish line. Root faltered a bit heading into turn one, and that gave Sabotka the advantage and the lead. But the drama was not over. With two laps remaining, another caution came out, as multiple cars were involved in a turn-four incident. The red flag stopped racing as the tangle of cars were removed from the track. It was a side-by-side restart with Sabotka opting for the top side forcing Root to restart on the low side. After a rocky start, Rocky Warner had climbed all the way back to seventh position on the caution restart. 71X Falter spun out on the restart. As it was his third caution, he was sent to the pits, his night over for the night. As racing ensued, it was Sabotka in the lead, with Root in second. At the checkered flag, it was 38 Zach Sabotka with the victory! 34 Kevin Root took second, while 57 Anthony Stockman took third, 1 Jack Meeks finished fourth, while 1j Rocky Warner finished fifth.

 

EMPIRE SUPER SPRINTS FEATURE: The sprints roared onto the half-mile track next, with 10 Jeff Cook and 90 Matt Tanner started in the top two positions. Tanner launched into the lead immediately, with Cook in second. 28FM Steve Poirer moved into third by lap two, with 19k Paul Kinney in fourth. 88C Chad Miller was in fifth by lap four, with 36 Matt Billings right on his back bumper. By lap six, 00 Danny Varin had moved into fifth position, behind Kinney. 28FM Poirier moved into second one lap later. But Cook didn’t like third place, so he took second back from Poirier one lap later. By lap thirteen, the leaders were moving into lapped traffic, with cars stretched around the entire track. Despite this, Cook could not gain on Tanner, and Poirier couldn’t gain on Cook. Not until lap twenty, that is. Poirier took the high line around the track as Cook and Tanner were caught behind slower lapped traffic. At the finish line, it was 28FM Steve “Fireball� Poirer with the victory. 90 Matt Tanner finished second, with 10 Jeff Cook in third. 19k Paul Kinney finished fourth while 88C Chad Miller finished out the top five.

DIRTcar 358 MODIFIED FEATURE: The 358 Mods squared off in a seventy-five lap feature next, with 22D Danny Johnson and 24 Brandon Sweet starting in the top two positions. 9 Billy Dunn and 9j Jordan McCreadie were in row two, third and fourth positions, respectively. Johnson elected to start the race on the outside, with Sweet starting on the inside. It proved to be a wise move, as Johnson led by two car-lengths as lap one came to a close. A caution flag came out on the track, as 1M Mathew Desjarding couldn’t find power at the drop of the green. After the restart, Johnson was back in the lead, but 9 Billy Dunn was hot on his tail in second place. 9j McCreadie and 31 Lance Willix battled it out for third position, while Sweet slid back to fifth by lap eight. Just one lap later, another caution came out as the track required debris to be cleared. The restart had Johnson, the leader, select an outside restart, with Billy Dunn restarting on the inside. Johnson took the lead, once again, with Dunn faster on the straightaways, but not so in the turns. Another debri-instigated caution came out in lap seventeen. Laps continued to tick by during a lengthy caution as race officials tried to untangle the restart order in the back of the field and 73 Kevin Poitras faced equipment issues. Poitras was pushed to the pits and racing ensued on lap twenty-three. On the restart, Johnson once again retained the lead, with Dunn right behind. 9j Jordan McCreadie settled into third, while 66x Cary Terrance made his presence felt, taking over fourth position, after starting ninth. In lap twenty-six, Billy Dunn was the leader, passing up Johnson in turn four. R70 Ryan Arbuthnot managed to improve to fifth position by lap twenty-seven. By lap thirty, Dunn was a straightaway ahead of second-place Johnson. As the race approached the halfway point, it was 9 Billy Dunn in the lead, 22D Danny Johnson in second, 9j Jordan McCreadie in third, 66x Cary Terrance in fourth, and R70 Ryan Arbuthnot in fifth. By lap forty, Dunn was well into lapped traffic, and half a track ahead of the second position. That’s where the battle was raging, as Johnson and McCreadie sparred for position while dodging lapped cars. In lap forty-four, McCreadie passed up Johnson for second, just as a caution flag unfurled over the track.

With his extensive lead deleted, Dunn faced a restart with McCreadie on his door. Knocking on the door of the top five leaders, was 3C Chad Brachmann, who had moved up from twenty-second starting position to sixth by the lap forty-four caution. As lap fifty ticked by, full-speed racing resumed. Billy Dunn launched out ahead of the pack, with McCreadie settling into second and 66x Cary Terrance in third. Brachmann moved into fourth by lap fifty-three, steadily reeling in Terrance, until he was right on the bumper of the 66x. 17D Danny O’brien moved into fifth position by lap fifty-five, after starting back in twelfth position. Two laps later, Brachmann put another notch in his belt, taking over third position, after passing Terrance in turn two. Meanwhile, Dunn continued to rocket ahead of the field, adding more and more distance between himself and the rest of the field. Once again that lead was decimated when a caution came out, as 23 Joey Ladouceur spun out in turn two. When racing resumed, there were just fifteen laps remaining. The single file restart had Billy Dunn retaining the lead with McCreadie in second, and Brachmann in third. A gladiatorial battle was raging for fourth position, as Terrance and O’Brien parried for space on the track. Terrance emerged in lap sixty-three with the advantage, retaining his fourth position. That victory was short-lived, as O’Brien came roaring back to take over fourth by lap sixty-seven. After another caution in lap sixty-eight, R70 Ryan Arbuthnot improved his position by pacing up Terrance and O’Brien for fourth position. Brachmann passed up McCreadie for second place with just four laps remaining. McCreadie chewed on Brachmann’s back bumper to try to regain his position. But Brachmann fought off the assault and pulled away with just one lap remaining. Nobody caught Billy Dunn. At the checkered flag, it was 9 Billy Dunn with the victory. 3C Chad Brachmann took second, with 9j Jordan McCreadie in third. R70 Ryan Arbuthnot finished fourth with 17D Danny O’Brien in fifth.

PRO STREET STOCKS FEATURE: The final feature of the night was the Pro Street Stocks, where 1x Mike White and 25B Marc Minutolo started in the top two positions. 7x Justin White and 14R Sid Harmer Jr. were in row two. Harmer shot outside and passed up the leaders in lap one. Lap two started with a caution, as 13 Kenny Hamm launched over the turn one berm. Hamm was able to return to the race at the tail of the field. Harmer retained the lead on the restart, while White maneuvered into second, passing up Minutolo. 3k Shawn Kirby was in fourth, with 7x Justin White trying to regain positions from fifth. Harmer ran out front through lap nine, but Mike White began to reel him in, closing down on the extensive lead by lap ten. One lap later, White took the lead, passing on the low side, as Harmer was getting loose in the corners. Meanwhile, Kirby and Minutolo were sparring for third position. With five laps remaining, the second caution of the race came out, as x15 Tyler Bushey came to a stop on the back straightaway. On the restart, Harmer challenged for the lead by diving low. He gained advantage through turns one and two, but White was faster through the straightaway, and took the lead right back. Another caution came out with four laps remaining. It was the chance Kirby was waiting for. He moved into second position, after leap-frogging past Minutolo and Harmer. With one lap remaining, Harmer retook second through turns one and two, but gave it back through three and four. At the checkered flag, it was 1x Mike White with the victory, with 14R Sid Harmer Jr. just nosing into second place. 3k Shawn Kirby took third, while 25B Marc Minutolo finished fourth and 7x Justin White took fifth.
