Roa eyes USAC/CRA prize this weekend at Canyon
By Scott Daloisio (Buena Park, CA) -- Coming off a victory in the USAC West Coast/Southwest Sprint Car Series’ last Thursday at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Brody Roa will kick off his 2018 USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series championship chase this Friday and Saturday, March 9th & 10th, at Canyon Speedway Park in Peoria, Arizona.

Roa’s early season triumph in “Sin City” combined with his dazzling finish to the 2017 campaign that included a win against the USAC National Sprint Cars at the Oval Nationals, has made him one of the favorites for the 2018 USAC/CRA championship. In 2017, the Garden Grove, California driver finished second in the title chase. The entire BRP team is determined to climb one step higher in 2018.
Wanting a warm-up for the USAC/CRA opener, Roa was on the mark at the cold and blustery Las Vegas track. The first night on the big half-mile, Roa timed in 12th in the 24 car field and won his heat race. After starting third in the 25-lap main event, he was running comfortably in second when he lost a wheel due to suspension failure heading into turn one on the fifth lap. Fortunately, Roa brought the green #91R to a stop in turn two, but he was done for the night and was saddled with a frustrating 19th place finish.
The following night, with the mercury in the thermometer shrinking a little closer to the bottom and the wind howling a bit louder, Roa qualified 6th in the 22-car field. He once again won his heat race and this time started on the outside of the second row in the A-main.
On the original shuffle on the start, Roa slipped back to sixth. The 27-year-old dropped one more spot before getting things turned around. On a track that was very tricky, he slowly and methodically began the drive to the front. By lap 10 he was up to fourth. He was still in fourth when the yellow came out on lap 16. Once the green light flashed back on, Roa started using every inch of the track and he was second by the conclusion of the 17th circuit. However, second was as far as he got by the time the checkers flew.
The Monday after the Vegas races, USAC officials put out a press release advising that the winning car had an illegal engine and had been disqualified. The disqualification gave Roa the first, of what he hopes is many, wins of 2018.
Roa was slated to race in the USAC/CRA 2018 season opener last Saturday at Perris Auto Speedway, but that race was canceled due to rain and cold weather.
