Runner-up finish in Spring Nationals stop at Tri-County
Kicking off a three-race weekend with the Schaeffer’s Spring Nationals, Payton Freeman traveled Tri-County Raceway (Brasstown, N.C.) on Thursday evening where he got the night started off on the right foot as he topped the 22-car field in time trials to set a new track record with a 12.096-second lap. Earning the pole position for the $4,053-to-win A-Main, Freeman ran second in the 40-lapper, trailing 0.399 seconds behind race-long pacesetter Garrett Smith. (Josh James Artwork)
For another $4,053-to-win A-Main on Friday afternoon at Crossville Speedway (Crossville, TN), Payton was forced to tag the tial of the field for the feature after electricial issues prevented him from record a qualifying lap. Wheeling his way into the Top-5, Freeman gained 18 spots in the 40-lap affair to register a third-place finish. He followed Carson Ferguson and Josh Putnam across the line.
To close out the weekend on Saturday, Freeman stopped at Clarksville Speedway (Clarksville, TN) for the $10,053 top prize. With a second-place finish in his heat race lining him up on the second row for the feature, Payton dropped one spot to finish fifth.
