Linder, Winebarger, And Ray Victorious At Welt & Welt Night
By Ben Deatherage
The Cottage Grove Speedway produced a splendid night of racing on Saturday August 10th. The entire evening was sponsored by the great people at Welt & Welt Inc. and featured the 360 Sprints, Northwest Extreme Sprints, Late Models, and Street Stocks. Despite a shower or two in the early afternoon officials were able to complete the entire program.

Both the 360 Sprints and Northwest Extreme Sprints ran together which would turn out to be a thriller of a thirty-lap feature. The BC Motorsports/Steelhouse Metal Roofing Supply #2 KPC of Colin Baker of Cottage Grove was the early car to beat as he would seize the lead in the opening laps. Baker was in search of his first career 360 Sprint main event victory.

As laps would click away Seth Nunes of Medford would put his mount in the contest for the win just around the halfway mark. Unfortunately the Napa Auto Parts/Lucas Oil Products/Rodgers Racing Engines #5N Maxim, of Nunes, and Baker would get together on lap fourteen and Nunes would get upside down in turn three.

Baker would be able to continue but would suffer damage on the right side of the car. Shortly after the restart Garen Linder from Central Point would seize the lead on lap seventeen in his Linder Powdercoating/Rodgers Racing Engines #22 KPC. Linder would build a significant size lead and would go on to win his first race at CGS in 2013.

Colin Baker would end the night in second place while third would go to the Held’s Automotive & Accessories/Budget Lumber/Independent Motor Rebuilders #68 J&J of Rob Held from Sutherlin. Mike Romig of Vancouver, Washington would place fourth in the Herz Precision Parts/Rabourn Performance Engines #22R Eagle followed by the Herz Precision Parts/Applied Suspension/Wolverine Chassis #28 Eagle of Mark Herz from Sandy.

Collen Winebarger would simply dominate the Late Model feature in his crate powered entry. The young ace from Corbett would earn the lead on the opening laps and would lead the caution free feature all the way to the end. It would mark the fourth time that Winebarger has put his Discount Race Car Parts/All In Property Investments/Hillsboro Vac & Sew #1 MasterSbilt in victory lane at the Cottage Grove Speedway.

Eugene’s Chuck Christian would earn the runner-up position in the Redwood Northwest/Coleen’s One Stop Bird Shop/Eco-Machine Technologies #422 GRT with the My Boy’s Slate Fired Pizza/Mueller Commercial Restaurant Services #18 MasterSbilt of Blaine Taylor of Creswell crossing the line in third. Completing the balance of the top five finishers would be the Send Transportation/Interstate Cargo/Sierra Ridge Cabinetry #88 of Mike Peters out of Cottage Grove in fourth and Tanner Wines from Lebanon in fifth driving the Kris Pickle owned Pickle Trucking/James Gang Pizza/Kartco Racing #77 MasterSbilt.

Last but not least the Street Stocks would be on hand at “The Grove”. Daniel Ray would take care of the field leading the entire distance. The only thing that would slow down the Pure Romance-Leslie Grimes/Brad’s Car Tunes/S.D.M.F. Race Cars #01 Camaro would be five yellow flag incidents. Ray would master every single restart to win his fourth feature of 2013.

The Nathan Anderson Dentistry/Platinum Hair of Creswell #73 Nova of Darin Crooks from Cottage Grove would end the evening in the runner-up position and behind him in third would end up being Brett Provost of Grants Pass in his Peckham Precision Engines/Timber Mountain Construction #50 Camaro. Don Garrett III of Portland would place fourth in his #75 Camaro while completing the top five finishers was Darryl Crooks in the Nathan Anderson Dentistry/Platinum Hair of Creswell #00 Nova in fifth.

The Cottage Grove Speedway will only be in action on Friday August 16th due to the Western Oregon Exposition. This event will be held for the first ever Summer Sizzle Tour featuring the best Kage Kart drivers in the Pacific Northwest. The next event on the ¼-mile will be on Saturday August 23rd when the American Sprint Car Series-Northwest Region make their final trip to CGS for 2013. Be sure and not miss your last chance to see the best 360 Sprint drivers on the Pacific Coast. For more information log on to www.cottagegrovespeedway.com or by calling (360)-699-RACE.
