Cottage Grove Speedway would host their second ever Fan Appreciation Night in conjunction with Pepsi Family Night on Saturday June 21st. The original date for Fan Appreciation Night was cancelled due to weather. Classes in action included the Huddle Automotive Repair 360 Sprints, IMCA Modifeds, Street Stocks, and Hornets.
In Huddle Automotive Repair 360 Sprints main event Allison Journey of Springfield, despite getting upside down in the heat race, would lead the early goings. Journey, in her Journey Built Homes/Rocket Designs/Stoneworks International/Eckstine Powdercoating #4J KPC, held on to the coveted to spot before Colin Baker from Cottage Grove would make the pass for the position. Baker would set a rapid pace once getting to the front in the Hedge Carter owned Huddle Automotive Repair/Steelhouse Metal Roofing Supply/Oregon West RV/Hedge Carter Gutter Service/Drummond Automotive #71 XXX. Baker would face some heavy traffic in the last laps but that would be the only thing to slow him down as he would capture his first ever winged 360 Sprint main event.
Garen Linder of Central Point mounted a valiant charge to try and run down Baker but would place his Cook Crane Corporation/Linder Powdercoating/Speedmart Inc./Rodgers Racing Engines #22 KPC in second followed by Allison Journey in third. The balance of the top five would consist of Medford’s Seth Nunes in his Napa Auto Parts of Klamath Falls/Lucas Oil Products/Lonnie’s Auto Body/Rodgers Racing Engines #5N Maxim in fourth and the Napa Auto Parts of Woodburn/Brooks True Value/Baxter’s Auto Parts/Adelman Peony Gardens/Gaerte Racing Engines #6A Maxim of Salem’s Kady Adelman in fifth.
In IMCA Modified competition it would be a caution filled affair with a total of seven stoppages taking place. The Commonwealth Financial/Dot’s Trophy Shop/Mickey’s Affordable Auto Sales/Jim’s Tire Factory #77 X-Factor of Kreg Britton from Cottage Grove for much of the race was the entry to beat. Britton would inherit the lead after early race leader Curtis Towns of Cottage Grove had to pull off on lap eight under yellow due to a flat tire.
Britton would keep all challengers at bay until getting passed on lap eighteen by Jacksonville’s Mark Wauge. Wauge would keep the lead for the remainder of the distance to win his third victory of the year at CGS. It also marked the second consecutive victory for Wauge and his Dog House Racing/Payroll Specialties Inc./Hoppes Construction/Schram Brothers Excavating #28M Impressive at the historic ¼-mile clay oval.
Redmond’s Mark Carrell would place second in the Mark’s Auto Body #27 GRT followed by Kreg Britton. Coming home in fourth was the D&D Automotive/KNND 1400 AM/Vintage Inn Family Restaurant/Todd’s Auto Body #5 Shaw by S.D.M.F. while behind him in fifth was the X-Factor Race Cars/West End Performance/Valley Rose Construction/IBEW Local 280 #24 X-Factor of Curtis Towns.
In Street Stocks a great battle for the lead would be waged between Evan Britton of Cottage Grove and Eugene’s Steve Begley. Begley would lead the first couple of laps in his Nathan Anderson Dentistry/Platinum Hair of Creswell/Stacy Graves Massage Therapy #00 Nova but would get passed on lap three by Britton. Britton would secure the lead and stay out in front of the field to lead the rest of the way to make it two wins in a row for him and his Dot’s Trophy Shop/Ollivant Timber Management/Howell Logging #85 Nova team.
Steve Begley was in second while third would go to the Oregon Property Services #73 Monte Carlo of Darin Crooks from Cottage Grove. Cottage Grove’s Mark Henderson was fourth in the Henderson Racing #0 Nova and behind him in the fifth position was Brad Green of Creswell piloting the B&R Reliable Transportation/Time To Shine Auto Detail/American Pump & Spa #1 Nova.
In the Hornets Josh Corley of Westfir was the machine to beat. Seizing the lead on the start the Burnett Builders/Thela’s Custom Jewelry #7C Nissan 200SX of Corley was quick but would briefly lose the lead to Chris Pierce of Cottage Grove. The Froggy’s Towing/Meineke Car Care Center #28 Chevy Cavalier of Pierce would grab the lead on lap ten only to get passed by Corley the following lap. Corley would hold on to win his first main event of 2014.
Chris Pierce was a respectable second followed by Dexter’s Taunton Swaim in the Randy Kuhl owned Bigg Dogg Recycling/DT Machine & Fabrication/More of Everything Racing Collectibles #17 Toyota Tacoma entry in third. Eric Cooper of Cottage Grove was fourth in the Eastside Rollforming Specialties/R&D Specialties #32 Nissan 200SX and the D&D Automotive/Furniture Options/BC Motorsports/Harris Machine & Design #7D Chevy Cavalier of James Deatherage, also from Cottage Grove, was fifth.
The Cottage Grove Speedway will be in action for two nights of the annual CGS Modified Nationals staring with Friday June 27th and concluding on Saturday the 28th. Classes in action on Friday will include the IMCA Modifieds, Micro Sprints, and Hornets while on Saturday it will be IMCA Modifieds, Northwest Extreme Sprints, and Hornets.
