Inside Line Promotions – COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (Sept. 21, 2015) – Patrick Dills closed his first season in a 360ci sprint car at Cottage Grove Speedway with a podium finish last Saturday.
Dills earned a third-place result, which marked his 14th top five of the season, to place third in the championship standings at the quarter-mile oval.
“All in all it was a great night,” he said. “Third place in the points exceeded our expectations going into the season.”
Dills kicked off the season finale by qualifying third quickest. He then finished fourth in the trophy dash after some early contact with a fellow competitor and he placed third in a heat race to line up on the inside of the third row for the 30-lap feature.
“It went green to checkered without a caution,” he said. “We had good speed the whole time. I was up to second at one point on the last lap. At the very end Seth Nunes was going pretty good on the top. I was in third, chasing down second place and Seth split us both going down the front straightaway. He and the third-place driver pushed up the track in turns one and two and I was able to drive underneath them.”
Dills powered from fourth to second on the backstretch before Nunes barely inched Dills out for the runner-up result at the finish line.
“They had to go to the transponders to see what place we got,” he said. “Every time we’ve run a 360 race it seems to slow everything down for me in the Extreme Sprints (class). The more I can slow things down equals a big advantage. Our goal is to win next weekend, but we also don’t want to tear anything up.”
Dills will use the momentum created from last weekend heading into this Saturday’s Extreme Sprints season finale at Cottage Grove Speedway. Dills enters the event leading the championship standings by 39 points.
