Cottage Grove, Oregon- Some great racing was to be had at Cottage Grove Speedway on Saturday May 21st. Despite forecasts that showed rain the historic ¼-mile clay oval was able to attract a healthy car count. In addition to the Wingless Sprint Series there was also the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Mods, and Quality RV Repair Hornets all in action.

Jacksonville’s Mark Wauge seized the lead on the opening start of the IMCA Modified feature. The Rodgers Racing Engines/Payroll Specialties Inc./Hoppes Motorsports/Willamette Valley Bank #1M PCD, of Wauge, would be the class of the field. Despite several cautions happening, a total of six, each restart Wauge managed to master them. Mark Wauge would lead every single lap of the feature to win his second main event at CGS in 2016.

The Superior Fuel Cells/West End Performance/BSB Manufacturing/IBEW Local 280 #24 Superior, of Cottage Grove native Curtis Towns, was second followed by fellow Cottage Grove driver Kinzer Cox in third, driving his C.J. Fire Protection/Robert Howell Logging/Jerry Robinette Performance Carburetors/BC Motorsports #1K Loose Gruff. The rest of the top five would be made up of Phoenix’s Jeremy Richey, chauffeuring his Big Time Repair & Shine/Chromeman Corporation/Jahnke Heating & Air Conditioning/Best Signs Inc. #15J J-Rich, in fourth and fifth finishing Greg McDonald, from Cottage Grove, in the Jerry Robinette Performance Carburetors/Clark Printing/West End Performance/J.J. & K.K. Racing #44 entry.

Mark Wauge would pull off a clean sweep after setting fast time of the night in qualifying, winning the Dot’s Trophy Shop Trophy Dash, and winning his heat race. Kinzer Cox was the other heat races winner of the night.

An incredible turnout was to be had for the IMCA Sport Mods with fourteen teams making the trip from all over Oregon and Washington. Springfield’s Daniel Ray would be the early pace setter. Ray, driving the Brad’s Car Tunes/Quality RV Repair/D&L Truck Parts/MTD Motorsports #01 Harris, would try and hold off the rest of the competition but would get passed on lap eight. Fortunately for him a caution would come out giving the top spot back to him.

Jorddon Braaten, of Central Point, would pass Daniel Ray on the restart and Braaten would show the way. Despite a total of seven cautions in the race there was nothing to slow Jorddon Braaten down as he would stay in first place for the remainder of the race. It marked the third straight time that the Quench & Drench Car Wash/Schaffer’s Racing Oil/Miller Paint Company/Advanced Door & Hardware #84 Dirt Works has won at Cottage Grove this season.

Springfield’s Jayson Nelson would place second in his Quality RV Repair/Point S Tire Factory of Springfield/Fastenal/Matco Tools #51N Harris and earning third was Gene Ashley, of Jasper, in the familiar Ashley Family Racing #85 machine. The balance of the top five consisted of Medford driver Mike Medel, in the Rogue Boiler Works/Southern Oregon Archery/Morton’s Sports Bar #30M Rayburn, in fourth and Springfield’s Shawn Hand fifth chauffeuring his 1400 KNND AM/Vintage Inn Family Restaurant/D&D Automotive/Oregon Taxi #13 Shaw.

Vancouver, Washington pilot Chris Frisbie was quickest in time trials in the Frisbie Motorsports/Clark Printing/Discount Race Car Parts/Harbor Rail Services Company #17 Shaw and Jorddon Braaten was the winner of the Dot’s Trophy Shop Trophy Dash. Braaten and Frisbie were the two heat race winners.

Last but not the least the Quality RV Repair Hornets would once again be in action. Leading the first few laps was Justin McCreadie of Phoenix. McCreadie, in his Big Time Paint/Jahnke Heating & Air Conditioning #15J Chevy Cavalier, paced the field until lap five when the J&M Racing #7C Nissan 200SX of Josh Corley got the lead. Corley, living in Westfir and the winner of the last three features, was in dominant form until mechanical problems forced off of the race pace.

Grabbing the lead on lap twelve was Joe Maricle. The Veneta veteran would remain in the front of the field in his More Of Everything Racing Collectibles/Royal Refuse Services #11 entry. It would be his first win of the campaign.

Justin McCreadie would be a respectable runner-up followed by the Quantum Mechanics/Big B Tire #30 Mazda Protégé of Springfield’s K.C. Scott in third. James Simmons, from Eugene, placed fourth in his It Works By Kayla Simmons/A+ Towing/This Little Light Of Mine Photography #16 entry while the Kimwood Corporation/Industrial Finishes/It Works By Kayla Simmons/Quality RV Repair #1N Honda Prelude, driven by Cottage Grove’s Mike Simmons, was fifth.

Josh Corley was fast time of the night while also winning the Dot’s Trophy Shop Trophy Dash. Heat race winners were Corley and Joe Maricle.
