Cottage Grove, Oregon- Cottage Grove Speedway hosted Mom’s Night Out on Saturday, May 11th, for the fourth race of the season on the ¼-mile clay oval. Classes on the card included the Todd’s Auto Body Sprints, IMCA Sport Mods, Street Stocks, Hornets, and Dwarf Cars. The previous evening, on Friday, May 10th, Karts were in action for the second time of the year with Austin Ellertson (Pee Wee), Jacob Daniels (Beginner Pee Wee), Mason King (5HP Intermediate), Carter Patterson (250cc), Brody Sim (Open Kage), and Jeff Cox (Flat Karts) earning victories.
The Todd’s Auto Body Sprint Cars had a thrilling main event. Jake Waddell, of Roseburg, set the pace early and held down the first-place position for the first seven circuits. Jacksonville’s Tanner Holmes rocketed his way to the front on lap eight. Holmes, despite times of being challenged, managed to keep back all contenders to win his first feature of the year at CGS. Cottage Grove native Kinzer Cox was the runner-up followed by Anthony Pope, from Roseburg, in third. The rest of the top five consisted of Junction City veteran Shane Forte, fourth, while fifth went to Tyrell Mead, of Winston.
Travis Pruitt, out of Molalla, was the man to beat for much of the IMCA Sport Mod race. Pruitt paced the field for the first eleven laps before losing the position. Isaac Sanders, from the coastal town of Brookings, took over the honor of becoming the trailblazer and stayed in the top spot until a last lap spin in front of the leaders allowed his brother, Matt Sanders, to grab the lead and the win. It is the second victory of the year for Brookings’ Matt Sanders while Central Point chauffeur Jorddon Braaten ended the night second over third finishing Doug Coffman, of Roseburg. Isaac Sanders wound up in fourth while completing the top five, in fifth, would be David Schmidt, now residing in Roseburg. Jesse Skidmore was victorious in the consolation feature earlier in the program.
David Schmidt’s night wasn’t over as he pulled off double duty between the IMCA Sport Mods and the Street Stocks. Schmidt took care of business in the Street Stock division. However, it was no easy task as Cottage Grove’s Kelly McDonald, racing for Tom and Joan Langan, put considerable pressure on Schmidt. Schmidt thwarted all attempts of being overtaken and recorded the first win of the season in the class. Kelly McDonald was second while finishing behind him, in third, was Yakima, Washington’s Melissa Adams. Cody Moore picked up fourth over Creswell youngster Garrett Barth, in fifth.
Eric Ashley dominated the Hornet main event. However, the Jasper driver, racing for car owner Randy Kuhl, was passed late in the race by Graig Osborne. Osborne, of Creswell, obtained the lead on lap nineteen to secure his first win of the 2019 campaign at CGS. Eric Ashley was the runner-up over Eugene’s Joe Maricle, in third. K.C. Scott, from Springfield, got fourth while fifth went to Brad Moffett, of Eugene.
Lastly, the Dwarf Cars made their first visit of the season. Lebanon’s Clayton Parsons set the tone early in the feature. But Parsons would lose the lead on lap three to fellow Lebanon pilot Danny Altom. Altom held on the rest of the distance, despite some challenge, to park his mount into victory lane. Molalla veteran Henry Corbin III placed second while John Chrisman, now residing in Hillsboro, got third. Clay Parsons ended the evening in fourth while finishing fifth was Roseburg’s Erin Morganstern.
Cottage Grove Speedway has two nights of action this coming weekend. Things get started on Friday, May 17th, for $5.00 Fast Friday.
