Cottage Grove, Oregon- Cottage Grove Speedway was the next battleground for the IMCA Wild West Modified Shootout on Monday, June 24th. The historical ¼-mile clay oval hosted their first of two straight nights of action for the series and marked the fourth round of the 2019 schedule for the tour. The highest car count of the week was hit with forty-two drivers making the journey representing the states of Oregon, Washington, California, Nevada, and North Dakota as well as the Canadian province of British Columbia.

In the feature, Collen Winebarger flexed his muscles once more. Winner of the previous two nights, the Corbett native took full advantage of his outside front row starting position. Setting a rapid pace, Winebarger, built a huge lead over the rest of the field.

Later, Collen hit some heavy lapped traffic in the final half of the main event and began to receive pressure from second-place Kellen Chadwick. Chadwick, of Oakley, California, tried several times to make a pass underneath or around the leader but each and every time Winebarger would thwart his advances. Unfortunately, the two would briefly touch in turn one on lap thirty-two resulting in Winebarger spinning, a yellow flag being thrown, and Winebarger going to the tail of the field. Chadwick inherited the lead with three laps to go.

Chadwick held on to the top spot the rest of the way to win for the second time ever with the series at Cottage Grove and collect his fifth career WWMS victory. Bricen James, of Albany, was second followed by Pacifica, California’s Shane Devolder, in third. The balance of the top five consisted of Keizer pilot John Campos and Albany’s Matthew Drager respectively in fourth and fifth.

Metchosin, British Columbia’s Geoff Morris, Cottage Grove native Curtis Towns, and Eston Whisler of Otis were the three B Main winners. Heat races were divided into six individual groups. Winners of the first round included Collen Winebarger, Pahrump, Nevada youngster Jake Pike, John Campos, Springfield’s Aaron Sheelar, Grey Ferrando of Stayton, and Kellen Chadwick. Reaching success in the second round were Winebarger, Shane Devolder, Keno’s Jeffrey Hudson, Jeff Faulkner of Rohnert Park, California, Matthew Drager, and Bricen James. Winebarger became the first driver of the week to sweep a heat group.

The Wild West Modified Shootout will stay put at Cottage Grove Speedway for the fifth round of the schedule on Tuesday, June 25th. Pit Gates open at 2:00 PM, Front Gates 3:30 PM, with Racing beginning at 6:00 PM. CGS will offer a $10.00 Car Load Special so pack those vehicle (safely) with as many race fans as possible.
