Cottage Grove, Oregon- Friday, July 5th marked the second of three nights of the 2019 Freedom Cup, presented by Hoppes Construction, at Cottage Grove Speedway. Just like the night before three classes were represented including the IMCA Sport Mods, Todd’s Auto Body Sprint Cars, and Mohawk Metal IMCA Modifieds. Around eighty-five cars would make the trip representing Oregon, Washington, California, North Dakota, and Colorado as well as the Canadian province of British Columbia.

The IMCA Sport Mod feature began with Jimmy Ford showing the way early. Ford, from Yuba City, California, battled hard with the likes of Cottage Grove’s Aaron Bloom for some time. Bloom edged out Ford at the line of lap three before Ford regained the position on lap ten. Unfortunately, Ford suffered a mechanical issue while in front of the pack on lap thirteen handing the top spot over to Brookings native Isaac Sanders.

Sanders lost the position shortly after the restart to Braedon Hand. Hand, of Cottage Grove, cruised the rest of the way to win his second straight night of action. Isaac Sanders placed second while Central Point’s Jorddon Braaten finished third. The rest of the top five consisted of David Schmidt, from Roseburg, in fourth, and fifth finishing Matt Sanders, also of Brookings.

In the Todd’s Auto Body Sprint Cars it was another thriller in lapped traffic. Vern Scevers, of Roseburg, was tough to beat in the early goings. Scevers worked the bottom of the racetrack and motored his way around the ¼-mile clay oval swiftly but began to get bottled up in lapped traffic.

It presented a pristine opportunity for Camden Robustelli to make a move up high and into first place. Robustelli cruised right along the rest of the way uncontested. It marked the first time in 2019 that the Medford racer has bested the field at Cottage Grove. Vern Scevers ended his evening in second while Junction City’s Shane Forte placed third. The rest of the top five consisted of Jake Waddell, of Roseburg, and Cottage Grove native Kinzer Cox in fourth and fifth, respectively.

Finally, in the Mohawk Metal IMCA Modified feature Paul Rea set the tone early. The Eugene veteran blazed the trail for the first four laps before Grey Ferrando took control of the position. Ferrando, of Stayton, navigated his machine in the top spot until lap nine. Eugene based driver Jesse Williamson was the one to make the pass, driving his younger brother Kevin’s car, and held on for the balance of the distance for his first victory of the year.

Collen Winebarger, of Corbett, ended his evening in second while Albany’s Bricen James posted a third-place result. Finishing fourth was Paul Rea and rounding out the top five, in fifth, would be Jake Mayden, of Springfield.

The 2019 Hoppes Construction Freedom Cup wraps up on Saturday, the 6th. All three same classes will return. Pit Gates open at 1:00 PM, Front Gates 3:30, and Time Trials at 5:30 with Racing beginning at 6:00.
