Thompson, Evans, Hodel, Mayden, Coffman, Osborne, And Dickenson Achieve October 17th CGS Wins

Cottage Grove, Oregon- For the last time in 2020, Cottage Grove Speedway was in action on Saturday, October 17th. The year was capped off with a bang as seven divisions were on hand for the final installment of the season. Limited Sprints, IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Mods, Street Stocks, and IMCA Sport Compacts were in the house as were special appearances by the Northwest Focus Midget Series and the Wingless Sprints.

Harrisburg’s Tyler Thompson obtained the lead late in the Limited Sprint feature and held out the rest of the distance. Thompson scored his second win of the season making it a three-way tie for most victories in the class this year. Jake Wheeler and Brian Boswell were second and third place in the finishing order. R.J. McGahuey wound up fourth over Morgan Burks, in fifth.

The Northwest Focus Midget Series paid their second visit to Cottage Grove in 2020. Despite being constantly chased in and out of lapped traffic, Nick Evans parked it on the front stretch when he was the first to cross the line in the Focus Fall Classic. It is the Granite Falls, Washington racer’s fourth win of the current campaign and his first at The Grove, and his first since September 18th at Deming Speedway.

Chance Crum was a respectable second, in the Bob and Lori Scott owned machine, while third went to Nik Larson. The Jesse Conway owned mount, driven by Shane Smith, placed fourth followed by Travis Jacobson, behind the wheel of the Dave Mead entry, in fifth.

The Wingless Sprints were in attendance at Cottage Grove for the second time as well. Michael Hodel took care of business and tamed the field despite briefly losing the lead in the main event. It is the Alger, Washington pilot’s first main event victory this year. Young Daysen Thomas was a strong second with third going to Tyrell Mead. Cooper Desbiens crossed the stripe in fourth while Steven Snawder scored fifth.

Seizing the lead on lap three, Jake Mayden dominated the IMCA Modified feature. The Springfield driver led the rest of the way and won his third victory at Cottage Grove in 2020 and his fourth overall win. Paul Rea ended the night second with Derick Young hitting the wire third. Credited in fourth would be Dan Sheller over Paul Culp, in fifth.

For the IMCA Sport Mods, Doug Coffman was the driver to beat. Coffman, of Roseburg, got to the front on the fifth circuit and remained there in the end. Coffman now has two wins at Cottage Grove and four overall. He now has the most Sport Mod wins in the state of Oregon and is his first triumph since at Cottage Grove Speedway on August 22nd.

Aaron Bloom had a great second-place run, in the Chuck Carson owned car, while Jim Smith also was impressive and ended up third. Gavin Ropchan wound up fourth while the fifth spot went to Theran Trissell.

The Street Stock witnessed a terrific battle between Graig Osborne and Taunton Swaim. Swaim led for much of the race but lost the top spot to Osborne on lap twelve. Swaim reclaimed it on the fifteenth trip past the flag stand only to lose the position on lap nineteen. Swaim made a great run on Osborne and Osborne spun on the final turn resulting in a photo finish.

Graig Osborne, of Creswell, was the winner by a slim margin of 0.016 seconds and is his fourth trip to victory lane. Taunton Swaim got second with third going to Anthony Prather. Mike Swaim ended the race fourth ahead of fifth finishing Troy Chamberlain, in fifth.

Finally, the IMCA Sport Compacts witnessed their seventh different winner in eleven races. Ryan Dickenson, from Roseburg, was large and in charge of the main event. He paced the field for the entire distance to win his first race of the year. Ricky Ashley, in Randy Kuhl’s car, and Kerry Cooper were second and third. Jim Simmons, racing for car owner Kerry Cooper, finished fourth with fifth going to Scarlett Drake.
