Leighton takes First series Win in Hoker Trucking Series Davenport Finale
By Anthony Ainslie (Davenport, IA) -- The Haulin’ with Hoker Trucking Super Late Models East Series wrapped up their doubleheader at Davenport Speedway Saturday night, and another different name was added to the winners list in 2020.
Saturday’s second show at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds marked round seven of the 2020 season for the East Series. A field of 31 cars from Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Illinois made the trip out to Davenport for the second of three shows the tour had on the weekend.

Hometown driver Spencer Dierks took the opening lead to kick off the 40-lap featue. He lead the first seven laps before another Davenport native, Matt Ryan, took over the lead. Ryan showed the way for four laps before Bill Leighton Jr. made his way around Ryan for the lead as they came off turn four.
Leighton proceeded to hide in lapped traffic, but as the race progressed, Jeff Aikey worked his way up to the second spot. Aikey worked his way past multiple lapped cars in the final ten laps of the race, and before long, the Ceder Falls, Iowa driver caught up to Leighton and challenged him for the lead. As that battle went on, Richie Gustin, Matt Ryan and Justin Kay went at it to decide the rest of the top five.
At the end of 40 caution-free laps, Leighton scored his first win of the season. It was first win on the East Series and his 16th career Haulin’ with Hoker Trucking/Malvern Bank Series feature win, currently third on the all-time win list. Leighton bounced back after finishing 14th the night before
Jeff Aikey had to settle for second while Richie Gustin took third, his best finish on the East Series. Matt Ryan and Justin Kay rounded out the top five.
The East Series finishes out the weekend this Sunday with a visit to the Bullring at the Rock Island County Fairgrounds in East Moline, Illinois. Following Sunday’s race will be the East Series’ visit to the West Liberty Raceway in West Liberty, Iowa. A week break will follow for the East while the West Series gets back to action on August 28th and 29th.
