Nezworski edges out Hanna for Davenport win
DAVENPORT, Ia. (April 23, 2021) – Friday was Koehler Electric Season Opener at the Davenport Speedway. With extra money on the line in two classes, the competition was intense.
The Petersen Plumbing & Heating IMCA Late Models provided the closest finish of the evening. Their twenty-five lap feature started with Andy Nezworski grabbing the early lead from the pole. Andy built up a lead until the caution flags started to fly on lap eight.
Chuck Hanna used the race’s final restart to propel himself up to second and then used the high side to reel in Nezworski. As the leaders encountered lapped traffic, Hanna drew alongside the leader.
At the checkers, it was Nezworski by mere inches over Hanna. Justin Kay fended off Matt Ryan for a third place finish. Fred Remley was a distant fifth. Nezworski and Ryan Claeys were late model heat race winners.
Spencer Diercks led flag-to-flag in the Eriksen Chevrolet IMCA Modified main. Diercks started on the outside pole and went directly to the top of the racetrack. The only thing to slow Spencer down was the four caution flags.
Five different drivers took a turn at the runner-up spot. Mitch Morris had second early in the race, fell back a few spots, but rallied back to finish second. Kurt Kile and Travis Denning traded positions several times, before finishing third and fourth respectively. Joe Beal rounded out the top five.
Mod heat races went to Morris, Chris Simpson, and Ryan Duhme.
Tyler Soppe dominated the IMCA SportMod main, leading all fifteen laps. While Soppe drove away from the field, Jacob Arp moved up two positions from his fourth starting spot. Jarrett Franzen held second for at time, but would have to settle for third. Phil Anderson started seventh and finished fourth. Cam Reimers ran top five throughout the race, before finishing fifth.
Thirty-eight SportMods were in the pit area Friday. Anderson, Franzen, Soppe, and Arp won the heats. Ryan Walker and Logan Veloz won the B-mains.
Jesse Owen steamed his way to a win in Koehler Electric Street Stock action. Tony VonDresky led the race early, but it was Owen taking the lead after a lap twelve restart. With two laps remaining, steam was visibly coming out of Owens’ racecar. Jesse kept his foot on the gas for the win. Von Dresky finished second. Zachary Zuberbier finished third, followed by a charging Nick Hixson and Jeff Struck.
Cyle Hawkins captured the win in the QCjeeps.com Sport Compact feature. Josh Riley took the early race lead, but his racecar would start to slow, Hawkins powered by and led the rest of the way to the checkers. Nick Proehl drove from eighth to finish second. Todd Sibley, Dustin Begyn, and Tim Sibley finished third through fifth, in that order.
The K Promotions-Davenport Speedway 2021 season continues next Friday, April 30th, with racing action in all five classes.
