Inside Line Promotions – LEXINGTON, Neb. (July 21, 2015) – Zach Blurton recorded a pair of top-five finishes last weekend during a United Rebel Sprint Series National doubleheader to keep himself within striking distance of the championship.
Blurton, who has earned 10 top-five finishes in 16 races this season, ranks fourth in the championship standings – only 18 points out of the lead.
“Overall it went pretty good,” he said. “We could have been better both nights. We really missed the setup and held on for decent finishes. We thought the track was going to take rubber a lot more both nights and it didn’t. Looking at it that way I’m pretty happy with it.”
Blurton opened the weekend on Saturday at Dawson County Raceway by winning his heat race.
“I finally changed it up and let my dad draw for me to start the night,” he said. “He drew the No. 4, which put us on the pole of a heat race. We led all the laps and that put us in the redraw.”
Blurton started on the inside of the second row following a seven-car inversion for the main event.
“I got into second right off the first start,” he said. “Then I fell back a little ways. I think I fell back to sixth at one point. I had a restart and got back around a car and then a guy spun out in front of me so that put us back into fourth. I really hung on to fourth the rest of the race.”
Blurton’s fourth-place result earned him the final lock-in position into Sunday’s feature redraw, where the inversion lined him up on the outside of the third row for the 30-lap main event.
“I stayed right in sixth the whole time,” he said. “A car spun out in front of us again and it moved me up a spot. I didn’t pass anybody. I just hung on really. I think we could have changed a few more things on the race car. With us thinking the track was going to rubber up we didn’t want to get it too tight, but we probably should have tightened it up more.”
Blurton, who is leading the URSS Kansas Region championship standings, will compete with the region this Friday at Dodge City Raceway Park in Dodge City, Kan., and Saturday at Dirtona Raceway in Hugoton, Kan.
